Art and Creativity

This subject was previously known as EDC161 Performing Arts for Educators.
This is the first of two Arts Education subjects. It introduces The Arts Learning Area subjects of Dance, Drama and Music and positions The Arts in a cultural context. The value and role of The Arts in children’s developmental growth and education is elucidated. The centrality of inquiry-based and praxis-led learning in dance, drama and music, that emphasizes creative thinking, self-expression, meaning-making and communicating ideas, is explored. Performing-arts praxis, reflection and appreciation activities provide experiential learning opportunities designed to promote personal confidence, arts literacy and presentation and communication skills in the performing arts – and for teaching. Within a lifelong learning framework, direct experience and personal investment in arts learning is intended to develop content knowledge.

Understand the value of dance, drama and music in society alongside children’s developmental growth. Inquiry-based and praxis-led learning will encourage your creative thinking, self-expression, meaning-making and ability to convey ideas. 

Participation in the creative arts has been shown to afford a wide range of benefits to mental health and wellbeing for young and old. This subject explores ways in which the creative arts and play can be used therapeutically to support and enhance mental wellbeing for children, adolescents and younger people. It explores particular challenges associated with life events, neurodiversity, or for those who are from minority or marginalised groups. A framework derived from principles of trauma-informed practice is used to inform critical evaluation of complex issues, and to consider appropriate and effective design of creative arts and play-based activities in a variety of scenarios. You will have opportunities to explore your own creativity and gain practical insight into different roles in the therapeutic arts, and to explore your own interests by conducting individual research that will deepen your understanding of the potential of creative arts and play for supporting aspects of the mental wellbeing of a specific cohort.

This subject explores historical and current case studies of creative arts practitioners from a range of cultural contexts living with physical or mental illness and the ways this is reflected or subsumed in their work. This engagement with creative work provides valuable perspective on lived experience and insights into the impacts of acquired or congenital disability or illness on the creative process and the impacts of the arts on health and wellbeing of individuals. The subject will draw on perspectives and literature of Health Humanities that reinforce empathy in engagement with people experiencing physical or mental illness and promotes patient-centred care and can underpin and enhance a current or future role in planning or delivery of arts programs in healthcare settings and the community.

Practical interventions employing arts-based activities, including music, theatre, dance and visual arts, are increasingly being employed nationally and internationally to improve mood and well-being, physical activity and cognitive processing for people with dementia. Arts-based programs have also been shown to have some capacity to enhance communication of emotions and relationships with carers. This subject will explore the evidence-based research on the benefits that can be conferred through the stimulation of sensory perception, reminiscence and subconscious movement using music, theatre, dance and visual arts. These will be dealt with in three separate modules. Students will develop knowledge of model interventions employing music, theatre, dance and visual arts, and each module will also provide an introduction to key elements of successful program design and the range of activities that can be employed.

Explore how music, dance, and theatre can improve the lives of people with dementia. You’ll review case studies and research for examples of creative activities. Think about your own arts program and how you can influence patients’ wellbeing.

This unit aims to facilitate a successful student transition from University life to the next stage of their careers, professional or further research. Through participation in a series of interdisciplinary simulated scenarios and real world challenges, students will further develop and practice different types of transferable skills and apply major discipline concepts in an interdisciplinary context. There will be a focus on the skills of leadership, mentoring, design thinking and entrepreneurship.

Arts Capstone

This subject was previously known as EDP263 Visual and Media Arts Education
Planning and pedagogy of authentic forms of arts education are addressed through the curriculum subjects of Media and Visual Arts. The school curriculum provides the framework for planning sequential, inquiry-based and engaging learning opportunities for primary school children. Experiential learning opportunities and reflective practices facilitate the development of practical understanding of the scope and nature of arts learning across the primary school years. Personal media and visual arts literacy are promoted as the foundation for teaching within a lifelong learning framework. Pedagogical understandings and practices that support the development of children’s identities and agency through their creativity, self-expression, meaning-making and communication of ideas are studied, practiced with children, and reviewed using an improvement cycle framework.

Develop arts literacy and capability through visual and media arts praxis and appreciation. Integrate the arts in teaching and learn how to advocate for arts learning. Create lessons that appreciate child development, curriculum and arts pedagogy.

Visual and Media Arts Education

This subject was previously known as EDE262 Visual and Media Arts for Early Childhood.Through engagement with Visual and Media Arts, this subject focuses on the principles, planning and delivery of authentic forms of arts education in early childhood settings for children aged birth – 8 years. Inquiry-based learning that embraces exploration, creativity, self-expression, meaning-making and the communication of ideas is presented within a child centred learning context. Planning for arts learning is examined within the framework of the National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education and Care, and the Australian Curriculum; and organising programs, environment provocations and pedagogical documentation around a cyclic process of observation, study and responsive planning are practised. Integral to the unit are experiential learning opportunities designed to enlarge children’s understanding of the scope and nature of arts learning across the early childhood years (birth – 8 years); and also, to develop their own visual and media arts literacy to a foundational standard for teaching.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Visual and Media Arts for Early Childhood

This subject was previously known as Fundamentals of Creative Music Practice.This subject provides the foundations for you to develop an independent, professional standard of creative practice and practice based research.You will examine concepts of musical creativity, originality and innovation and develop a deeper understanding of how this pertains to your individual practice and specialisation in performance, composition or music technology and production.You will devise a small scale creative project tailored to your own musical interests and will be supported through the development of that project via structured learning materials that examine all stages of the project. This includes idea generation, communication, planning and management, resourcing and audience generation.You will engage in reflective practice throughout the subject via individual and group based reflection.

The Creative Arts plays an important role in primary school classrooms. In this subject you will be learning valuable practical skills and increasing your knowledge base in Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Arts so that you enter your future Kindergarten to Year 6 classroom with confidence. You will examine the place of the Creative Arts within the school and the wider community, and how the Creative Arts makes a positive contribution to the personal, social and intellectual lives of your future students. In this subject you will learn to plan engaging lessons, how to integrate the Creative Arts in subjects across the curriculum and how to link them directly to curriculum outcomes. You will explore what it means to provide a safe and effective learning environment for your students and you will explore how students learn through the Creative Arts disciplines of Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Arts.
