Bioscience study FAQs

What is bioscience?

Bioscience is life. It’s the study of living organisms, from the plants you keep at home to the food grown at an agricultural scale. It’s the science that explains the human body, and all the marine life in the oceans.

Bioscience isn’t limited to one field, so you could learn anything from molecular biology to Antarctic sciences. Find inspiration when you browse bioscience courses through Open Universities Australia.

What will I learn in a bioscience course?

What would you like to learn with a bioscience course?

You’ll have the option to study human anatomy, right down to the molecular level. You could choose to major in chemistry or physics, and learn about the science of water or land. Surround yourself with plant life when you study horticulture, or discover everything there is to know about marine ecosystems. With a bioscience course, the natural world awaits.

Can I study bioscience part-time or full-time?

It’s up to you. When you study with your university through Open Universities Australia, you can choose how many subjects you take at once. Qualifications may be 1-3 years full time, but you can take things as slow as you like at a part-time pace.

Start even lighter with a single biological science subject or short course. It’s a great way to learn something that interests you and get a feel for student life, without committing to anything long-term.

What are the entry requirements for a bioscience course?

It depends what you’d like to study. You can read about the entry requirements for your preferred course on our website. Some bioscience qualifications will require you to have a minimum ATAR, or prior work or study experience, before you can enrol.

But there are other ways to get into university. In fact, it’s possible to get into many science courses through us without an ATAR.

Book a consultation with a student advisor to find out about the entry options that are available for you. We can open the door to study possibilities you might have thought were closed to you.

What are the career opportunities after completing a bioscience course?

From data analyst to ecologist, the world is your oyster!

You could go on to explore a career in:

  • Marine biology and research

  • Environmental science or conservation

  • Agricultural science

  • Medical research and development

  • Education and academia

You might also like to explore further study in an area like:

Environmental science to increase your knowledge in areas like conservation biology and environmental health.

Agriculture to understand how to work with green technologies and farm-based enterprises.

Data analytics to learn how to analyse large biological datasets for a career in biotechnology or research.

Why not reverse-engineer your career? Share your dream job with our friendly student advisors, and they’ll show you which bioscience courses could help you get there.

How long does it take to complete a bioscience course online?

You’re in control. Biomedical science degrees can be completed in as little as three years full time, or slower with part-time enrolment. Short bioscience courses can be completed in 10 weeks, giving you the chance for a rapid career boost, or a speedy entry into student life.

Browse all bioscience courses through Open Universities Australia, and you’ll find the duration of each course on display.
