About this degree
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- The ability to identify and analyse complex problems within information technology and design solutions to these problems at a highly skilled level.
- A depth of technical expertise in at least one facet of information technology sufficient for a career in information technology together with the capacity to continue developing relevant knowledge, skills and expertise throughout their careers.
- The ability to manage projects in aspects of information technology relevant to their field of study, including the ability to develop, manage and participate at all levels in team environments.
- An understanding of professionalism and ethics in the context of the global information technology industry.
- The ability to communicate effectively through a range of verbal, written and/or presentation skills at an advanced level.
- The ability to apply their knowledge and skills to plan and execute a substantial capstone experience or a research-based project and/or piece of scholarship.
The Master of Information Technology (MIT) at the University of Newcastle is a broad, flexible and technical degree. It offers exciting and diverse career opportunities and challenges. This program provides foundation IT skills for entrants with limited IT experience. It is also suited to experienced IT professionals wanting to enhance their skills.
Enhance and apply your current skills within emerging technology driven growth areas. These areas include IT, communications, management, business and entrepreneurship. Broaden your career opportunities by developing advanced research and analytical skills.
Students can choose to specialise in three key interest areas:
- Business analytics
- Management information systems.
- Artificial Intelligence.
Recommended study pattern
The program requirements and the volume of learning are dependent on the student's prior academic qualifications.
To complete the Master of Information Technology:
- The MIT comprises of 160 units, in which students choose to complete a No-Specialisation or one Specialisation pathway.
No Specialisation pathway:
- Students complete 80 units of core courses and 80 units of courses chosen from the course list.
Specialisation pathways:
Students may choose one from the following Specialisations:
- Business Analytics Specialisation: 80 units of core courses, 40 units of compulsory courses and 40 units of courses chosen from the course list or;
- Management Information Systems Specialisation: 80 units of core courses, 40 units of compulsory courses and 40 units of courses chosen from the course list or;
- Artificial Intelligence Specialisation: 80 units of core courses, 40 units of compulsory courses and 40 units of courses chosen from the course list.
Please note: The above structure of courses reflects the full length of the program. Students who have been admitted to the program with advanced standing for recognised prior learning must contact the Program Convener for details of their program structure. Each student will be assessed on a case by case basis.

To meet the award requirements of this program, you must successful complete 160 credits points.

Entry requirements
AQF Level 7 entry:
- Students with a three year Bachelor degree in a non-related field of study to Information Technology are eligible to undertake the 160 unit program which can be completed in 2 years full time or 4 years part time.
- Students with a three year Bachelor degree in a non-related field of study to Information Technology, who also hold a minimum of two years of relevant senior level industry experience** will study between 120 – 160 units. Students will be advised of specific program requirements depending on the content of previous work experience.
- Students with a three year Bachelor degree in a related field of study* are eligible to undertake a 120 unit program that can be completed in 1.5 years full time or 3 years part time.
AQF Level 8 entry:
- Students with a four year Bachelor Honours degree in a non-related field of study to Information Technology will study between 120 – 160 units. Students will be advised of specific program requirements depending on the content of previous studies.
- Students with a Graduate Certificate in a non-related field of study to Information Technology will study between 140 – 160 units. Students will be advised of specific program requirements depending on the content of previous studies.
- Students with a Graduate Diploma in a non-related field of study to Information Technology will study between 120 – 140 units. Students will be advised of specific program requirements depending on the content of previous studies.
- Students with a Graduate Diploma in a related field of study* are eligible to undertake a 120 unit program which can be completed in 1.5 years full time or 3 years part time.
- Students with a four year Bachelor Honours degree in a related field of study* are eligible to undertake the 80 unit program which can be completed in 1 year full time or 2 years part time.
*Senior level examples: senior analyst/programmer, senior developer, senior software engineering, senior business analyst, IT manager**Related fields of study may include but are not limited to IT, computing and technology.
All Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the University’s English proficiency requirement:
- IELTS overall minimum - 6.5
- IELTS section minimum - 6.0.
If you have additional qualifications or experience above what is required for admission, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning (RPL). This means you can complete your degree faster with less courses to complete. Different pathways are outlined on each degree page.
