Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security

By the end of this course you’ll be able to:  

1. Demonstrate specialised knowledge and understanding of scientific theories, principles, concepts, and practices in Cyber Security. 
2. Communicate individual and/or team-based solutions for cyber security problems. 
3. Demonstrate professional integrity, ethical conduct, sustainable and culturally inclusive standards in designing and implementing cyber security solutions. 

Our Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security will equip you with a deep understanding of scientific theories and practices in the field, empowering you to develop and communicate effective solutions to cyber security challenges. The program emphasises professional integrity and ethical conduct, ensuring you can design and implement sustainable, inclusive cyber security strategies. 

Pathways  

After completing the Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security, you are able to apply to the on-campus Master of Cyber Security and carry over all credits achieved. You will be exempted from completing the four (4) courses (48 credit points) completed in the Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security and will be required to complete an additional twelve (12) courses (144 credit points) as specified in the program structure in order to qualify for the MC159P25 Master of Cyber Security degree. 

Credit outside of the above arrangements will be assessed consistently with the RMIT University credit policy . If you wish to apply for a credit transfer/RPL, please refer to Apply for credit. 

Recommended study pattern

We recommend that you complete the courses in this program in the following order:

Complete the following Two (2) Courses: 

• INTE2665 Introduction to Cyber Security  
• COSC2531 Programming Fundamentals.  

AND  

Select and Complete Two (2) Courses from the following list:  

• COSC2061 Data Communication and Net-Centric Computing  
• COSC2670 Practical Data Science with Python  
• INTE1002 Digital Risk Management and Information Security  
• INTE2580 Ethical Hacking and Security Testing.

INTE2665 Introduction to Cyber Security 

This course covers the essentials of cyber security, including practices and technologies to protect digital assets from unauthorized access and threats. You'll explore concepts like risk-based security, cryptography, network security, and legal/ethical issues. 

COSC2531 Programming Fundamentals 

This course introduces foundational programming skills, including understanding computer systems, components, and basic programming concepts. You'll learn to solve problems with algorithms and develop maintainable solutions using object-oriented principles. 

Electives

COSC2061 Data Communication and Net-Centric Computing 

You'll gain an understanding of data communication and network technology, including principles, protocols, error handling, and emerging technologies. The course focuses on how these elements apply to software development in networked environments. 

COSC2670 Practical Data Science with Python 

This course provides hands-on skills for managing and analysing data in various formats using Python. You'll cover data wrangling, modelling, transformation, and visualisation, including applying machine learning tools for data analysis. 

INTE1002 Digital Risk Management and Information Security 

This course offers a management perspective on information security, covering risk management, protection of assets, and response strategies. It includes a work-integrated learning experience for applying knowledge in a simulated workplace. 

INTE2580 Ethical Hacking and Security Testing 

You'll learn practical skills for security testing, including monitoring traffic, testing secure applications, and identifying vulnerabilities in various systems. The course covers input validation, man-in-the-middle attacks, and secure software testing techniques.

To be eligible for the Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security you must have:  

• Successfully completed an Australian Bachelor's degree (or equivalent oversees qualification)* or  
• A minimum of 5 years professional work experience in a related industry.

*Applicants with professional experience at a senior level that is less than 5 years may also be considered.   

To have your professional experience considered you must include in your application:  

• A CV  
• A statement that details your experience.  

*If your qualification was completed more than 10 years ago you will need to provide evidence of ongoing professional work and/or professional development in the same discipline as the program for which you are seeking entry. 

You may also be considered for the graduate certificate if you have a minimum 5 year’s full-time work experience in a related industry setting. Applicants will need to submit a CV.

English Language Requirements

International students are required to provide current evidence of English language proficiency for admission to RMIT University. You can provide your results from one of these three options:

1. An accepted English language proficiency test, or
2. An accepted English language provider, or

Australian Student Visas

RMIT Online’s Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security does not meet Australian student visa requirements. For an Australian student visa, you must have an on-campus place in a program of study, such as our Master of Cyber Security. For more details on RMIT’s on-campus programs visit rmit.edu.au.

Credit and exemptions will be assessed consistent with the principles of the RMIT University Credit Policy. 

Applicants who have completed or partially completed a similar program at another institution (with entry criteria similar to this program) may be granted some credits or exemptions towards this program.
