Primary Mathematics 1: Numeracy

This subject focuses on working with literature in the middle and upper primary years. You will examine the classroom use of literature in print, multimodal and digital forms, and analyse mentor texts for their language and visual resources. Working with a range of literature, you’ll explore strategies for teaching reading comprehension and fluency, and ways of responding to texts. Other elements of the language and literacy program, such as spelling and vocabulary development, the building of grammar and text knowledge, and writing skills are also explored, and issues in assessment are considered. You will also plan a literature-focused program to scaffold speaking, reading and writing skills in a systematic way, with particular attention to working inclusively with diverse students, and considering appropriate strategies for assessment and evaluation.

English in the Primary Years: Working with Literature

It is imperative that teachers have a sound understanding of how students learn to compose effective texts.   This subject will extend your knowledge of different types of texts and the grammatical and visual features typically found in a range of text types.  You will design a sequence of lessons using a text-based teaching and learning cycle as the foundation for a principled and explicit approach to writing pedagogy. You will make use of a range of teaching strategies to support the learning of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socio-economic backgrounds.   This subject explores the demands of writing and creating with reference to the Australian Curriculum: English, and the NSW English K-10 Syllabus and related documents.

English Teaching: Focus on Writing and Creating

Literacies and numeracies form the foundations for future learning. As a teacher in a classroom, you need to engage students from diverse backgrounds and with a range of learning needs. You will examine the literacy and numeracy demands, requirements and teaching strategies relevant to all curriculum areas. This subject provides you with conceptual frameworks to support understanding, and practical guidance to plan and deliver a program which addresses language, literacy, and numeracy in all subject areas. Special attention is given to your personal literacy and numeracy skills and your obligation to achieve and maintain the highest standards of literacy and numeracy as part of your professional practice.

Literacies and Numeracies in Context

This subject provides an introduction to reading pedagogy, including approaches to working with print-based, digital and multimodal texts. It introduces you to research about social practices of reading, and about processes of learning to read. You will explore the essential components of reading instruction, including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, as well as systematic approaches to teaching reading. You will be introduced to diagnostic approaches to assessing reading, and approaches to planning and differentiating according to individual student needs.

English in the Primary Years: Focus on Teaching Early Reading

Understanding how children learn to read is critical for teachers of English in primary school classrooms. In this subject you will be introduced to reading pedagogy across all Primary key-learning areas. Through discussion and reflection, you will gain a strong foundation in professional knowledge about reading that you can extend during professional experience as you develop confidence and competence as a teacher. You will examine how children learn to read print based, digital and multimodal texts, and how you can best teach children to learn to read. You will investigate the demands of reading and viewing with particular reference to the Australian Curriculum: English and the NSW English K-10 Syllabus (or state equivalent) and support documents.

The subject introduces you to the Australian Curriculum: English, and the NSW English K–10 Syllabus. It presents a socio-cultural perspective on children’s language and literacy development before and during the school years. The subject introduces children’s literature, and its role in the development of language and literacy, including print, visual and multimodal literacy. You will be introduced to the importance of planning for diversity (e.g., linguistic, social, gender) in the classroom, and they develop strategies for teaching speaking and listening; reading and viewing; and writing. You will then use your theoretical understandings to evaluate classroom resources, and to design elements of a classroom language and literacy program.
