This subject will prepare you to take a leadership role in the workplace that allows collaboration in ethical decision-making. The focus is on recognising actual and potential ethico-legal dilemmas in professional practice, and how decisions are made, justified and reviewed. A conceptual framework will be used to explore the decision making process while examining actual and perceived roles, professional values, and communication and collaboration practices when decisions with an ethical and/or legal dimension have to be made.

Bioethics and Law for Health Care Leadership

This unit is designed to foster knowledge and understanding of the concepts and practices of multidisciplinary healthcare for older adults with chronic progressive disease, and the application of palliative care principles at end of life. Participants will develop an understanding of comprehensive assessment of the older person, symptom management, advanced care planning, communication at end of life, and bereavement support.

Chronic Disease Management and End of Life Care

This unit is designed to foster knowledge and understanding of neurocognitive disorders in older people, application of person-centred care across care settings, the design of dementia enabling environments, and approaches to enhance communication. Students will also gain an understanding of responsive behaviours in the context of dementia care, and application of the biopsychosocial model of pain in the care of people with cognitive and communication impairments.

Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Neurocognitive Disorders

This foundational unit is designed to foster knowledge and critical inquiry into current issues in aged care across a range of healthcare settings. Students will apply theoretical approaches to understand ageing in the 21st century; the promotion of healthy ageing; and the provision of ethical multi-disciplinary care for older people from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, students will explore the complexity of the contemporary Australian healthcare system, and the support of older people to navigate the continuum of care. Students will also appraise policy and practice implications emerging from the most prominent issues in contemporary Australian aged care, the Royal Commission into Aged Care and the Covid 19 pandemic.

Contemporary Issues in Ageing

This subject is designed to foster knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles and practices of continuous improvement in a range of healthcare settings. Participants will develop an understanding of creative, effective and practical approaches to implementing quality and safety practices in the workplace. As well, evidence–based leadership and change management strategies in the workplace will be explored.
