The Bachelor of Special and Inclusive Education (Primary) is an initial-teacher education program that prepares Primary teachers who can teach from Kindergarten to Year 6 in inclusive settings and special education classes. It is accredited with the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) and has been designed to meet the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. Students graduate with a National Primary Specialisation as mandated by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), in English/Literacy in the inclusive classroom. The course is structured to provide in the first year, eight discipline units across the Primary Key Learning Areas, to ensure a spread of content background; successful completion of this first year also gives all students, irrespective of their educational backgrounds, the opportunity to demonstrate they meet the Government&#39;s <a href="https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/teacher-accreditation/how-accreditation-works/your-accreditation/future-teachers/increased-academic-standards" target="_blank">academic standards for studying teaching</a>.

Deepen your understanding of Autism.This degree, offered by the Autism Centre of Excellence, applies a multi-disciplinary, whole-of-life focus to autism. Our approach aligns with the neurodiversity paradigm, and we incorporate the voices of autistic and autism community in each of our courses. The course uses the lecturer content with the voices of lived experience to allow you to gain a foundation in communication and learning in autism, understand how to select and apply evidence-based practices and explore different factors and pathways to understanding and supporting behavioural challenges. This Graduate Certificate in Autism Studies is a prerequisite for the Master of Autism Studies, which is an accredited pathway to becoming a developmental educator. In this unit teacher education students will be supported to critically engage with, reflect on, and apply to practice fundamental considerations for ensuring high quality and equitable educational opportunities for all learners. Teacher education students will be provided with opportunities to develop advanced understandings of key issues related to inclusive and special education in contemporary education contexts. Acknowledging and valuing the full range of human diversity, teacher education students will develop and apply advanced knowledge and skills to providing high quality education to all learners. There is a focus on complex and sometimes conflicting theoretical perspectives. The pervasive influence of social constructions of disability and issues of ableism and disablism will be addressed. Relevant legislation, policy, and practice will be examined. Teacher education students will critically analyse barriers to equity in education for students with disability. A range of research-informed pedagogical approaches will be explored and evaluated. Family perspectives; understanding diverse learners; collaboration; establishing an inclusive classroom environment; and designing inclusive curriculum and teaching practices including engaging with universal design for learning and quality differentiated practices will be considered.

Inclusive and Special Education

Contemporary practice in Autism education requires sound knowledge, understanding and support by educators to effectively create an inclusive and best practice learning environment. A movement in the disability sector advocates for individuals and their carers to have their voice heard. In this subject, students examine the shift in support for individuals with Autism and their carers. More specifically, the Autism community moving to a voice that is heard, rather than passive. The person first approach is used in this subject to introduce the problem solving skills required when supporting an individual with Autism by actively listening to their needs. Further, an exploration of the evolution of Autism education, based on the medical theory in relation to diagnosis of Autism spanning early 1940’s to the twenty first century, introduces students to the complexity of Autism, the development of knowledge and application in education systems.

This subject explores the core principles and practices of inclusive education, emphasising the importance of understanding and responding to the diverse needs of students. It delves into contemporary perspectives on human learning and the historical and philosophical foundations of inclusive education. The subject focuses on effective differentiation strategies and assessment methods to foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Theory in Practice: Inclusion and Differentiation

This subject was previously known as ICT Across Curriculum.Studying this subject, you will develop key skills to apply Digital Literacy and Technologies across the curriculum and monitor progress. You will explore content and skills detailed in the National Program Standards for Initial Teacher Education ICT Priority Area, NSW Supplementary Documentation: Elaborations in Priority Areas, and NESA Report Digital Literacy Skills and Learning. You will also examine the Digital Technologies Curriculum and ICT General Capabilities, as prescribed by the Australian Curriculum. Analysing theories (SAMR and TPACK), you will learn to implement Digital Literacy and Technologies in education, using safe, ethical and socially responsible strategies. You will explore programming and computational thinking and investigate adaptive technology for improving learning outcomes. Working with your peers, you will hone your collaboration and critical thinking skills.

Digital Literacy and Technologies Across the Curriculum

The subject will explore the nature of inclusive education in the 21st century with an emphasis on diversity and exceptionality. Based on a philosophical foundation that values every student and acknowledges the right of every student to the most appropriate educational opportunities, this subject involves independently researching and analysing the complex theoretical and practical issues associated with effective inclusive education. You will be required to develop an advanced and integrated understanding of learning and teaching approaches to suit the diverse educational needs of students. You will build on your understanding of theories of human development and learning in relation to student diversity and exceptionality, applying planning models to include all students.

Inclusive Practices in Education Settings

Children may experience a range of learning difficulties that will interfere with learning. In this subject students explore strategies to identify and reduce the impact of learning challenges in early childhood contexts.

Learning Difficulties and Abilities

Educators are required to ensure that their classrooms are inclusive environments. Integrate your knowledge in this capstone subject which aims to strengthen your understanding of educational strategies that provide effective teaching for students with disabilities or learning difficulties. As part of this subject you will complete the mandatory special and inclusive education content required for teachers employed in public schools (in NSW). This subject includes 35 days of Professional Experience in an approved school setting, and the culminating Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment in which teacher education students demonstrate their ability to meet the Graduate Teacher Standards.

Inclusive Teaching: PrEx 35 days

There will be times throughout your teaching career that you will need to adjust your teaching strategies to encompass the needs of students in your classes who have learning difficulties or disabilities. In this subject you will develop the responsive teaching skills to address the impact of learning difficulties and disabilities on engagement and learning in the classroom. You will learn how to confidently and effectively teach and intervene for children with learning difficulties or disabilities. This subject includes 20 days of professional experience.

Educational Intervention for Students with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities: PrEx 20 days

Literacy underpins all learning for children. As a future teacher, it is important that you have a depth of understanding about the wide variability of literacy achievement and the factors that affect literacy achievement in the classroom. In this subject you will examine assessment techniques for determining learning needs in literacy by studying theory and practical learning activities. Teaching and intervention activities that accelerate literacy learning will also be explored. You will be drawing on your knowledge of evidence-based literacy techniques to plan, implement and evaluate intervention strategies for literacy learning. This subject requires you to have contact with children so you can complete the assessment tasks. Requirements for student teachers who have contact with children are the completion of online anaphylaxis training, the completion of an online child protection module and a valid Working With Children Check (WWC).

Intervention for Literacy Difficulties in the Classroom

Start your teaching career with an understanding of the strengths and challenges of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As a professional, you will be in a position to enhance your students’ learning and support them and their families as they navigate the education system. In this subject you will engage in critical discussion about the theoretical explanations for ASD. You will focus on the development and learning of students with ASD, and study the evidence based teaching practices and interventions used for learners with ASD. You will investigate the collaborative practices that best support students diagnosed with ASD in special and inclusive settings, and in everyday living.
