Linear Algebra

This subject is designed to provide an introduction to the area of linear algebra. The subject introduces vectors and vector spaces covering addition of vectors, scalar multiplication and the geometric meaning of vectors. The theory of matrices is also developed and includes matrix addition and multiplication, inverse matrices, determinants and the use of Gaussian elimination to solve systems of equations. Matrix theory is also applied to the study of linear transformations.

This subject introduces students to Calculus, a fundamental area of mathematics involved in studying the behaviour of single variable functions. The subject covers limits, differentiation, integration and the applications of calculus, including maximising and minimising functions.

The subject outlines the principles of cell and molecular biology as underpinnings of life and organism function. Gene structure, the control of gene expression, regulation of gene function, molecular processes involved in protein synthesis and the role of genomics and of gene therapies in medicine will be examined.

Cellular and Molecular Biology

This subject will take a combined and systemic approach to the study of the structure and function of organ systems in the body during the lifecycle. This includes an introductory module about the organisation of the human body, body regions and specific organ systems. Modules will cover the anatomy, histology and physiology of organ systems responsible for the support and movement of the body and the maintenance of the body’s homeostasis (respiratory, circulatory, digestive and urinary systems). An online learning format will include lectures, laboratory sessions, online work and workshops.

The Human Body 1

This second subject on the human body will continue the study of the structure and function of organ systems in the body during the lifecycle. Modules will cover the anatomy, histology and physiology of organ systems responsible for the internal body coordination and control (nervous and endocrine systems), the organ systems responsible for body defence (lymphatic and immune systems), and normal human development and aging. A further module covers principles of microbiology and the roles of micro-organisms in human infection.An online learning format will include lectures, laboratory sessions, online work and workshops.

The Human Body 2

This course will develop students’ skills to describe, interpret and appraise biomedical data and health information. By using practical scenarios and information available in the public domain, students will acquire the knowledge and the communication tools needed to engage with biomedical science-related issues in a range of contexts. They will critically examine how science is being presented in the media, evaluate the quality and integrity of the communication of scientific information presented and critique the appropriateness of the communication to the intended audience. Factors that affect health literacy at the individual and population level and strategies that can mitigate these will be explored.

Scientific Literacy and Communication 

This subject in calculus provides a solid foundation in the theory and applications of differential and integral calculus to a variety of real-world situations. The subject begins with some preliminary material that reviews the concept of a function and of basic problem-solving techniques and includes limits, differentiation, graph sketching, integration and inverse functions. Apart from imparting technical knowledge on rules of integration and differentiation, the subject requires students to solve conceptual problems, thus enhancing their understanding of the principles of calculus. The key aim of this subject is to make students understand, appreciate and finally enjoy and embrace calculus. Successful completion of Calculus will ensure that students have the necessary preparation and foundation for subsequent major studies in mathematics, in particular, Advanced Calculus. This subject is an essential part of the mathematics program and is specifically designed in consultation with education providers to meet the needs of teacher training. A key feature of this subject is the project based approach. Students are assigned projects. As each topic is taught, students are asked to apply their learning to the project and, as a part of their assessment, students are asked to submit their project report. Thus students will be able to apply the knowledge in a real life setting.

This subject in discrete mathematics covers relations, including equivalence relations and partial orderings; algorithms; areas of number theory, including induction and recursion; proofs; and graph theory, including an introduction to trees and their applications. It is designed to further students&#39; mathematical content knowledge as well as their skills in communicating complex mathematical knowledge and ideas.

Discrete Mathematics

Advanced Calculus is designed to instruct students in areas of modern calculus and its applications to real world phenomena. The subject covers differential equations, modelling, series, multivariable functions, integration and partial differential equations. It is designed to further students’ mathematical content knowledge as well as their skills in communicating complex mathematical knowledge and ideas.

Advanced Calculus

This subject provides an introduction to statistical theory. It equips students with an understanding of statistical practices and data analysis techniques. It covers data analysis, probability, random variables and the use of statistical software.
