In this subject you will be introduced to the concept of climate change and its predicted impacts on natural and built environments. Using climate change economics, you will evaluate various national and international policy frameworks including carbon markets to mitigate human-induced climate change. You will also explore a range of business implications arising from climate change mitigation and adaption policy responses.

This subject introduces you to the field of environmental and resource economics. You will explore the basic relationships between the economy and the environment and learn how to tackle environmental and resource degradation issues using economic principles and methods. In particular, you will examine (i) the theoretical framework for the optimal management of natural resources and environmental quality, (ii) various analytical tools to assess environment policies, including benefit-cost analysis, and (iii) different policy approaches to address environmental externalities, such as command-and-control and incentive based strategies.

In Recessions, Inflation and Economic Growth, you will get to know the economy as a whole. You will apply simple models to better understand the driving forces of phenomena such as inflation, unemployment, economic growth, foreign debt, and the current account deficit; and discover about their effects on our prosperity and wellbeing. Importantly, you will explore the effectiveness and desirability of policymakers&#39; responses to various economic situations via monetary and fiscal policy. For example, you will discuss whether and when should the central bank change the interest rate, whether the government should run surpluses or deficits, and many other real world relevant questions.

Recessions, Inflation and Economic Growth

In this subject you will explore the how agriculture and, in recent history, agribusiness have played a critical role in human development. This subject will deepen your understanding of agribusiness in the broader economy and it is aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal number 12 Responsible Consumption and Production. In particular, you will investigate the place of agriculture in the Australian context, and how the establishment of agribusinesses has played a role in the post-colonial Australian economy.  Through guided case studies you will consider how the development of agricultural trade has influenced global economic development and explore the key international agreements and partnerships that sustain and contain global agribusiness.

Agribusiness and its Place in the Economy

This course surveys the comparative political economy of East Asia, a highly dynamic region and one of critical importance to Australia&#39;s economic prosperity and security. It examines nine countries, including China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia. Within these national settings, it focuses on government interventions in national economies and business involvement in politics, and activities that have helped to shape different rates of economic growth and political openness. This course is offered at Nathan in even years, and Gold Coast in odd years.Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 2009IBA Business and Politics in the Asia Pacific Region, 3027IBA Business and Politics in the Asia Pacific Region or 3027GIR Business and Politics in the Asia Pacific at Griffith University.

Business and Politics in the Asia Pacific

Sustainable economics provides the foundation knowledge of economic concepts and principles and develops your critical thinking and problem-solving skills to enable you to engage in meaningful discussions concerning local and global issues from individual choices or corporate strategies through to government decision-making about national policies. You will explore economic growth, sustainability, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the interaction of social and economic development. Real world economic issues will be used to demonstrate the complexity and competing perspectives of sustainability in terms of environment, social, economic, cultural and political priorities in the context of how economists measure costs and benefits and develop economic solutions to market inefficiency and failure.Students must not have completed 1303AFE Economics for Decision Making 1.

Sustainable Economics

Personal Finance integrates economics and personal finance concepts, such as interest rates, time value of money, probability, diversification and biases in consumer finance, to help students appreciate the implications of economic events and the complexities of financial decision-making. You will gain economic and financial literacy to better plan for your future and make more informed financial decisions through practical financial decision-making applications, including saving, investing and planning for retirement, evaluating student loans and mortgages, and personal taxes. Students should not enrol in the subject if they have completed 1205AFE Personal Finance at Griffith University.

Personal Finance

This subject provides some powerful tools for understanding how economies work. It introduces the concepts and methods of experimental and behavioural economics; models of economic growth, business cycles, and financial crises; macroeconomic indicators of economic growth, unemployment, and inflation; and tools to understand and evaluate monetary, fiscal, and other economic policies. Economics affects everything in our lives—what we earn, how we work, where we learn, what we consume, how much we waste; the list goes on. An understanding of economics is critical in an uncertain world, where market forces have such a significant influence on our lives. Any student undertaking a course in commerce or business at the undergraduate level requires an understanding of economics—how people make decisions (rational or otherwise), economic policy, challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on global economic recovery and decent work progress, sustainable economic growth and productivity, climate change dilemmas and so on. In this subject, you will come to understand the dynamics of the digital economy, including the importance of platforms, networks, attention, and growth. You will also explore alternative economic models facilitated by the Internet, such as the gift economy. This subject will provide you with a nuanced perspective on how the economy has changed over recent decades, why it matters, and what might happen next.
