The Undergraduate Certificate in Agriculture is your opportunity to learn how to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges in food production and sustainable farming – all while building a career in a fast-growing industry.You’ll learn about historical developments of the agricultural and horticultural industries in Tasmania and Australia, as well as learn about current and future opportunities predicted for the industry. You’ll be introduced to key concepts in food and fibre production, such as supply chains, value chains, value adding, and quality assessment, and explore the challenges of pests, weeds, and diseases in primary production, including the impact on productivity, profit and market access. You’ll also learn about Tasmanian animal production systems and explore a variety of strategies that growers use to meet their production targets.As part of this program, you’ll have the opportunity to attend excursions to Tasmanian commercial animal production enterprises, as well as hear from guest speakers in your practical tutorial sessions. This program also provides an opportunity for you to attend a 3.5 day field trip to the north-west of the state during the mid-semester break.

This unit offers a comprehensive exploration of the vast range of animal diversity. Students will examine the evolutionary history, evolutionary relationships, and ecological adaptations of animals across aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Students will be introduced to how mathematical models are used in biological, biophysical sciences and we will emphasise insight into how models may be derived from biophysical assumptions. A small but representative range of biophysical applications is investigated. The strengths and limitations of models to make predictions about ecological sustainability are explored. The subject is organised in modules, each focusing on a specific application.  Learning resources including all lecture materials will be available on-line. Students participate in two 1-hour problem solving classes per week to work through problem sets designed to strengthen basic mathematical skills. Considerable use will be made of spreadsheets as a tool for understanding mathematical models and performing calculations.

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is concerned with the function of biological systems at the molecular level. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is central to most studies in biology and life sciences and is directly related to biomedical research and biotechnology. In this subject, students are introduced to gene structure and function, DNA replication, transcription and translation; molecular biology; protein structure and its relationship to protein function and enzyme kinetics. Students will investigate a typical biochemistry technique and conduct research on a specific protein.

Study cells up close to learn how they are made up, function and convert food into energy to sustain life. Discover why protein is critical to a cell’s structure and performance, and how it helps to regulate the body’s tissues and vital organs.

Introduction to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

The subject outlines the principles of cell and molecular biology as underpinnings of life and organism function. Topics covered include cell structure and function, the molecular aspects of the cell cycle and the molecular basis of genetics. Gene structure, the control of gene expression, regulation of gene function, molecular processes involved in protein synthesis and the role of genomics and of gene therapies in medicine will be examined.

Cellular and Molecular Biology

Biochemistry is concerned with the function of biological systems at the molecular level. It is central to most studies in biology and life sciences and is directly related to biomedical research and biotechnology. In this subject, you are introduced to cell biology and cell metabolism, building on the concepts developed in BCM201 (Introduction to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology). You will study the generation of energy in cells through the oxidation of carbohydrates and lipids; the formation of ATP, the energy currency of cells; lipids, cellular membranes and compartmentation; and the signalling processes that co-ordinate and regulate cellular activity. The practical exercises illustrate some basic experimental and data analysis skills and reinforce concepts in metabolism and cell biology.

Study the structure and role of living cells to understand the biological processes that give and sustain life. Learn how the composition of cells can change and cause disease, and how proteins and DNA interact to create health benefits.

Metabolic Biochemistry and Cell Biology

Gain an understanding of animal identification for future employment in agricultural, horticultural and environmental areas. You will finish the subject being able to examine animal structure and identify animals in phylum or better level using appropriate techniques. You will study invertebrates (sponges, cnidarian, flatworms, molluscs, annelids, anthropods, nematodes, echinoderms, etc.) and the vertebrates (fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals). You will also learn about lifecycles, structure, function and reasons for importance of different groups of animals.

Take a virtual trek into the natural world and study the structures, lifecycles and functions of different animal groups. Explore animal reproduction and body processes. Identify the characteristics in fauna as varied as amphibians, worms, mammals and birds.

Animal Diversity

This subject provides you with the knowledge and critical thinking skills required to analyse and address questions concerning how humans interact with animals (anthrozoology) and how they interact with the natural environment (ecopsychology). Throughout the subject, you are provided with a broad overview of relevant theories and methods of scientific inquiry. There is an emphasis on developing practical solutions to challenging social issues such as the use of animals, land and water in food production, conservation of endangered species and companion animal breeding and training. Online learning materials are used to provide information about contemporary issues, with tutorials providing many opportunities for you to engage in discussion, debate and further analysis.

In the first part of this subject you will be introduced to key concepts in animal science, including animal breeding, biotechnology, nutrition, growth, reproduction, lactation and animal welfare, and major global issues such as food security and environmental impacts of animal agriculture through flip teaching (weeks 1 - 7). You will then follow a more applied module (weeks 8-12) in which you will analyse agricultural issues like sustainability, climate and environment, and sustainable cropping and grazing systems.
