This subject provides an introduction to language, literacy and literature in the primary school, including the centrality of these strands of English to living and learning. Effective teaching of language, literacy and literature rests upon theoretical understanding and practical appreciation of the functions of language and literacy in sociocultural contexts. The modes, textual varieties, purposes and functions of English are emphasised as students develop confidence in their own professional literacy, especially in relation to writing and multimodal forms.

This subject gives you an exploration of how the Latin American people, landscape and culture have been defined through the writings of European, North American and Australasian travellers. Studying this history will enable you to appreciate how the concept of Latin America has evolved since Columbus&#39;s writing, and to develop a deeper perception of Latin American culture. European Literature and Languages: Historical Perspectives

Children’s literature is an important tool for exposing children to the moral, ethical and practical problems of the world in a way that is manageable and accessible for them.When you study this unit you will be introduced to the key elements of children’s literature, using case studies from children’s books, stories and poetry. You will gain an understanding of the range of concepts involved in analysing children’s texts, including the significance of the implied reader, the power of ideological contexts and the role of literature in childhood.You will explore a range of literary genres, techniques, and styles (including humour, fantasy and realism) in order to gain essential skills in reading, understanding and writing about literature.

Introduction to Literature: Children's Books

How much of a tale is in the telling? This subject introduces concepts, terms and skills used in the analysis of literary narrative, and applies them to texts drawn from a wide range of genres, periods and nations. The subject will consider key topics in narrative analysis, such as: narrative voice and point of view; the relationship between author, narrator and reader; narrative time; narrative and genre; the unreliable narrator; adaptation of literary narratives to film; the ways literary texts open and close; narrative poetry; and narrative theory.

Telling Tales: Literature and Narrative

This unit introduces students to the critical reading of diverse texts—fiction and non-fiction, poetry and prose, literary and non-literary forms. Students will explore and experiment with a range of writing practices and reflect on the contemporary ethical, practical, and imaginative challenges and possibilities of writing in an ever-evolving digital environment. The unit will guide students in cultivating the habits of crafting, refining and editing their own creative texts, developed with specific genre, purpose, reading context(s) and readership in mind. Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Writing Creatively

This unit demystifies the “literary” by examining the rise and development of literary fiction, noting its attributes as well as understanding what literariness is defined against. Students begin by having fun writing overwrought “purple prose” stories which they then analyse and learn to revise and edit according to a literary aesthetic. The unit also focuses on developing complex characters who drive plot, exploring significant themes and issues, and experimenting with different narrative styles.

Writing Literary Fiction

Experimental Writing takes what you thought you knew about creative writing and turns it upside down. As a third-year subject in the Creative Writing major, Experimental Writing is an opportunity for Creative Writing students to spread their wings and explore far-off and hitherto forbidden (and forbidding) regions of creative practice. The subject examines experimental theory and technique, and draws on literary histories of innovative poetry &amp; prose. In the first half of the subject, students are introduced to a rich field of experimental possibilities, and are encouraged to utilise these in the development of their own projects. Then, through ongoing discussions with their tutor and peers, students are supported to produce the boldest, most original and most unusual project of their degrees.
