Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor of Legal Studies is a broad and comprehensive course which will provide graduates with a wide legal knowledge and skills in legal reasoning. In particular, this course provides students with the opportunity to design their own program of study after completing the core units. Students may study units of interest from a particular category which will enhance career opportunities in an ever-changing legal services market. The course will also provide career opportunities for those with an interest in a career in policy development and the justice sector.Please note: students will only be admitted to the full Bachelor of Legal Studies upon successful completion of the four Open Access subjects [LSU100, LAW100, LAW101, LAW102] with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.0.Bachelor of Legal Studies aims to graduate students who can demonstrate:<ol><li>a knowledge of the fundamentals of the Australian legal system;</li><li>knowledge of areas that could include judicial administration, criminology, criminal law, business studies, management, communications, environmental and rural studies;</li><li>the knowledge and skills to work in many different roles in research, operations, policy or advocacy in the justice sector;</li><li>autonomy, well-developed judgment and ethical responsibility; and</li><li>cognitive, technical and communication skills to undertake professional roles in research, operations, policy or advocacy in the justice sector.</li></ol>

An understanding of how the legal system works is a valuable skill for students pursuing a wide range of career outcomes. This subject is suited to non-law students and provides a comprehensive introduction to legal studies, starting you on the path to achieving an understanding of how legal systems operate in Australia and elsewhere. You will explore the ways in which the law is made, and how law applies in various contemporary contexts. As part of your study, you will also develop introductory level skills in legal research, writing and analysis.

This subject was previously known as POL291 International Security Studies.
This subject defines international security broadly to incorporate political, societal, military, environmental, economic and technological factors. After examining the competing theories of international politics and different conceptions of security, the focus shifts to the post-Cold War international system and especially the roles of the Subjected Nations and international law in international security. It utilises case studies from various regions to explain the changing dimensions of security.

Understand international politics, and security and strategic studies. Examine competing theories and different conceptions of security, the post-Cold War system, the roles of the United Nations and international law in international security. 

This subject was previously known as PICX110 Introduction to Security Studies.This subject is a gateway unit into further study in Security Studies. It will introduce students to the theoretical foundations, essential concepts and central issues in the field of Security Studies. It will also further develop and refine students’ academic skills and literacy. Students will learn how to use Security Studies&#39; central theories and concepts to gain a deeper understanding of the leading security challenges currently confronting Australia and the wider world. At its conclusion, students will have acquired the academic skills and conceptual knowledge necessary to successfully pursue their undergraduate studies in Security Studies.

Analyse security, instability and armed conflict in the modern system. Gain an overview of interstate/intrastate war, military power, alliances, nuclear weapons, humanitarian intervention, terrorism and counterinsurgency.

Drawing on the Australian context, this course examines the contemporary and historical significance of Indigeneity in structuring patterns of law making, offending, victimisation, criminal justice system responses and experiences; and considers new forms of crime prevention and innovative justice practices. Emerging issues relating to ethnicities, crime, victimisation and the criminal justice system will also be addressed.In Australia there is on-going public and governmental concern for the recognition of Indigenous peoples rights and, more recently migrant and other culturally diverse groups. Crime control policies/programs and operation of the Australian criminal justice system are frequently critiqued for being inequitable, intolerant and ignorant towards Indigenous peoples and also ethnic minorities. It is essential that students of criminology and criminal justice have an understanding of how Indigeneity and ethnicities impact crime, victimisation and the criminal justice system. The purpose of this course is to provide students with the foundation from which they can begin to develop this understanding.

This interdisciplinary subject engages students in a detailed study of Indigenous experience of social and legal systems from invasion/colonisation to the present day. Beginning with the global historical context, the subject traces the ongoing struggle for Indigenous justice from the violent colonial frontier to the era of social media. The subject explores issues including Land Rights and Native Title, criminal justice, Indigenous ownership of intellectual and cultural property, and treaty negotiations at the local and national levels. Where appropriate, comparisons are drawn from the experience of Indigenous people in other places.

This unit requires students to draw on theoretical and discipline knowledge and use these to engage actively in a current and topical policy problem. The students will have opportunities to consult experts in a given policy area and identify relevant evidence, expert opinion and stakeholder views. Students will explore a range of problem definitions and scenarios, and consider alternative policy solutions. Students will develop and present a comprehensive and constructive policy proposal which demonstrates an awareness of ethical, political, social, economic and cultural factors which are significant in the specific policy context.

Policy Design: Concepts and Case Studies

This subject was previously known as PICX802 Terrorism
Few security issues define our times more than that of terrorism. This subject provides a solid foundation for terrorism studies, encouraging students to build a thorough understanding of the definitions, origins, and history of terrorism around the world, and considering terrorism as a tactic, as a strategy, and as a mode of communication. Students will explore the wider effects that terrorist discourse plays in contemporary global society, including debates around local, regional and global responses, terrorist overreach, and state overreaction. The subject will also critically examine a series of key themes and questions in terrorism studies such as religion and terrorism, state sponsored terrorism, the future of terrorism, and how academics can best conduct terrorism field research.

Research the history of terrorism around the world. Decipher modern terrorism tactics, strategies and communication methods. Question regional and global responses, terrorist overreach and state overreaction.

The subject was previously known as PICX320 Ethics and Security.As the capstone subject for the Department of Security Studies and Criminology, PICX3020 partners students with organisations drawn from government, industry, and civil society. Teams of students will work on projects designed both to contribute to the mission of their partner organisation and to give students the opportunity to apply the insights they have developed over the course of their program to a practical problem in their field. Mentors from the partner organisations will provide guidance to the student teams during the unit. Alongside their project work, students will undertake some complementary career development exercises and consider what it means to think and act ethically in their chosen careers. Applications to undertake PICX3020 in Session 2 will open at the start of Session 1 and close at the end of Week 5 in Session 1. The Special Approval Permission Waiver is the last stage in the process, so you do not need to submit this until advised.

Ethical Practice in Security Studies

This subject is an introduction to Gender Studies, an interdisciplinary field that analyses gender and how it intersects with sexuality, race, class, different abilities, and other identities. We establish foundational knowledge of and key concepts in how gender has been theorised and debated through exploring grassroots gender liberation activism including feminism, gay liberation, and the trans and intersex movements.

Unearth new ways of thinking about femininity and masculinity. Read up on male and female representation throughout the literary canon. Address abortion and reproductive rights. Highlight historical and contemporary examples of sexism in the media.

This subject is the second of two Masters project subjects involving supervised independent research in/of a discipline-relevant topic. This subject focuses on the completion and presentation of the research commenced in HUMN600 Masters Research Project 1, and will be taken in the next available study period following that subject. The specific nature of the project, the methods of research and the submission format will be determined in consultation with a discipline supervisor and may include professionally orientated tasks or components.
