An understanding of how the legal system works is a valuable skill for students pursuing a wide range of career outcomes. This subject is suited to non-law students and provides a comprehensive introduction to legal studies, starting you on the path to achieving an understanding of how legal systems operate in Australia and elsewhere. You will explore the ways in which the law is made, and how law applies in various contemporary contexts. As part of your study, you will also develop introductory level skills in legal research, writing and analysis.

Welcome to the Australia legal system. You’ll explore who makes laws and how it’s done. Make a start on your legal research and writing skills. Gain an overview of the legal profession and think about where you might fit.

This unit gives students the opportunity to engage in the composition of a self-directed research project in their field of specialization. This unit necessitates students to thoroughly engage with the existing research on their topic, using it as a stepping-stone in developing their own research skills. Students will be accompanied in devising a research question, translate this question into a set of research tasks, synthesise an appropriate methodological framework, conduct a literature review, and write up the result of their research as a coherent long research essay. This research relies on utilizing academic secondary sources and does not require original empirical work.

Supervised Project in Security Studies

This unit provides students with the opportunity to examine in depth a current and topical issue in security studies and criminology. The specific topic of the unit will differ each session, capitalizing on opportunities for departmental academics to present contemporary and cutting edge research in areas of emerging concern for the security of Australia, its region and the world.

Emerging Topics in Security Studies

This subject provides a critical reflection on issues currently facing First Nations peoples, in Australia and globally, in achieving justice. Students will be exposed to Indigenous perspectives on justice through Indigenous-authored research that allows the lived experiences of First Nations people to be heard. Using a strengths-based approach, the course provides students to consider the intersections of history, culture and justice in the ways we have responded and should respond to crime.

This subject was previously known as POL291 International Security Studies.
This subject defines international security broadly to incorporate political, societal, military, environmental, economic and technological factors. After examining the competing theories of international politics and different conceptions of security, the focus shifts to the post-Cold War international system and especially the roles of the Subjected Nations and international law in international security. It utilises case studies from various regions to explain the changing dimensions of security.

Understand international politics, and security and strategic studies. Examine competing theories and different conceptions of security, the post-Cold War system, the roles of the United Nations and international law in international security. 

This subject was previously known as PICX110 Introduction to Security Studies.This subject is a gateway unit into further study in Security Studies. It will introduce students to the theoretical foundations, essential concepts and central issues in the field of Security Studies. It will also further develop and refine students’ academic skills and literacy. Students will learn how to use Security Studies&#39; central theories and concepts to gain a deeper understanding of the leading security challenges currently confronting Australia and the wider world. At its conclusion, students will have acquired the academic skills and conceptual knowledge necessary to successfully pursue their undergraduate studies in Security Studies.

Analyse security, instability and armed conflict in the modern system. Gain an overview of interstate/intrastate war, military power, alliances, nuclear weapons, humanitarian intervention, terrorism and counterinsurgency.

This interdisciplinary subject engages students in a detailed study of Indigenous experience of social and legal systems from invasion/colonisation to the present day. Beginning with the global historical context, the subject traces the ongoing struggle for Indigenous justice from the violent colonial frontier to the era of social media. The subject explores issues including Land Rights and Native Title, criminal justice, Indigenous ownership of intellectual and cultural property, and treaty negotiations at the local and national levels. Where appropriate, comparisons are drawn from the experience of Indigenous people in other places.

This unit requires students to draw on theoretical and discipline knowledge and use these to engage actively in a current and topical policy problem. The students will have opportunities to consult experts in a given policy area and identify relevant evidence, expert opinion and stakeholder views. Students will explore a range of problem definitions and scenarios, and consider alternative policy solutions. Students will develop and present a comprehensive and constructive policy proposal which demonstrates an awareness of ethical, political, social, economic and cultural factors which are significant in the specific policy context.

Policy Design: Concepts and Case Studies

This subject was previously known as PICX802 Terrorismew security issues define our times more than that of terrorism. This unit provides a solid foundation for terrorism studies at a postgraduate level, encouraging students to build a thorough understanding of the complex definitions, history, manifestations, and transformation of terrorism around the world. Terrorism will be critically examined as a tactic, as a strategy, and as a mode of communication. Students will explore the wider effects that terrorist discourse plays in contemporary global society, including debates around the nature and drivers of Islamist terrorism and key groups such as Al Qaeda and ISIL. The unit will also critically examine a series of current themes and questions in terrorism studies such as relationship between religion and terrorism, the media and terrorism, the realities of cyber and nuclear terrorism, the future of terrorism, and how academics can successfully conduct terrorism field research.

Research the history of terrorism around the world. Decipher modern terrorism tactics, strategies and communication methods. Question regional and global responses, terrorist overreach and state overreaction.

The subject was previously known as PICX320 Ethics and Security.As the capstone unit for the Department of Security Studies and Criminology, PICX3020 partners students with organisations drawn from government, industry, and civil society. Teams of students will work on projects designed both to contribute to the mission of their partner organisation and to give students the opportunity to apply the insights they have developed over the course of their program to a practical problem in their field. Mentors from the partner organisations will provide guidance to the student teams during the unit. Alongside their project work, students will undertake some complementary career development exercises and consider what it means to think and act ethically in their chosen careers. Applications to undertake PICX3020 in Session 2 will open at the start of Session 1 and close at the end of Week 5 in Session 1.
