Climate change and environmental stress more generally pose great challenges to humanity in every corner of the globe. Making human lives sustainable in such conditions involves meeting challenges which extend from securing essential food and energy supplies to developing viable settlements and social, cultural and economic institutions, as well as finding effective systems of local, national and international governance. The Geography Major explores the varied dimensions of social, economic and political change in an environmentally stressed world. It examines the threats and opportunities to developing and maintaining local communities within the context of regional, national and international processes.
Geography explores the relationships between people, places and environments. As our worlds have become increasingly interconnected, fast-paced and more complex due to technological and social change; symptoms of this speed and complexity include disconnectivity, restrictions on mobility and competition for resources. This makes Geography more relevant than ever.
You will learn how to integrate various perspectives in social research and natural science to identify practical solutions to issues surrounding: population growth; food security; migration; natural hazards; climate change; global cities; sustainable development; health and wellbeing; power and place; and, the emerging creative economies.

This is a unit about energy management and in particular, how to minimise energy use, without reducing services, by using energy more efficiently and by reducing waste. An energy audit plays a large role in informing the energy management process. The unit delivers knowledge surrounding the process of implementing energy management programs in commercial and industrial companies. The unit begins with a general description of energy management programs and the framework and standards for implanting such programs before introducing some of the tools and techniques of energy management, including energy auditing and energy data analysis. Energy Auditing and Management

The subject will provide an overview of the concepts and principles of sustainable waste management. A critical approach to theories, techniques and methods of sustainable waste and resource management will be introduced in the course to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding on waste management. The subject will cover the subject areas of perceptions of waste, classification and characterization of waste, waste audit, 3R principles, waste collection, transportation, treatment technologies and safe disposal, performance evaluation, and strategy and policy regulation. In addition, the subject will cover the emerging concept of waste management such as ‘zero-waste’ in the context of circular economy.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Sustainable Waste Management

The subject explores human population growth and the impending global food crisis by introducing agriculture as a managed ecosystem, from the earliest shifting cultivation systems to the most intensive systems currently practiced today. The ecological, economic and social sustainability of these systems is considered in relation to diversity, intensity of management and productivity. The subject includes field trips to contrasting agricultural production systems in the Hobart &amp; Launceston areas to illustrate major sustainability concepts covered in the subject. Field trips are recorded and made available for flexible delivery to all students.

This subject provides students with a practical understanding of key systems for protected area planning and management. Terrestrial, freshwater and marine protected areas are considered. The global context of protected areas is analysed, including issues of definition, scope and governance. As governance processes provide the institutional structures within which planning and management occurs, particular attention is given to public, private, community and collaborative arrangements. Systems and associated methods for addressing complexity, sustainable finance, management effectiveness, community engagement and landscape/seascape scale management are then considered. These topics are explored by drawing on the experiences of practitioners, case study examples and fieldwork.

Protected Area Planning and Management Systems

Society needs professional environmental managers who have the knowledge and skills to effectively tackle problems of sustainable resource use, climate change and biodiversity conservation. Environmental managers also play an important role in helping communities identify and move towards sustainable and just futures. Environmental management is about how we (institutions and individuals) try to identify, protect and enhance environmental values. So we start by examining the variety and meanings of such values. We then explore the various means - the menu of options - for delivering environmental outcomes. These options include instruments such as legislation and market-based approaches; and methods such as community engagement and outreach. We also critically examine the effectiveness of such measures, and consider how we might achieve better management outcomes. These topics are exemplified through case studies in land use planning, food systems, waste management, coastal management, wetlands and biodiversity conservation.

To provide the student with the principles and practices necessary for the planning and management of marine protected areas. Within this subject students will study protected area management from a regulator’s perspective, covering the following broad concepts: 1. Introduction to marine protected areas and their types 2. Planning and administration of marine protected areas 3. Establishing a marine protected area 4. Managing a marine protected area

This subject introduces students to management in diverse health care environments. It explores the complexities and challenges of health care management, and examines theoretical and contemporary evidence-based practice perspectives through review of current research. The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol is widely recognised as the best practice for carbon accounting, making a thorough understanding of it essential for success in this field. This subject will equip you to stay ahead of the curve in the fast-paced carbon accounting and climate reporting world.In this subject, you’ll gain a robust understanding of the GHG Protocol, including its definitions of organisational boundaries and the three Scopes of emissions (Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3). You&#39;ll also learn how to calculate carbon equivalents and effectively use ‘factors’, building a solid foundation of knowledge essential for critically engaging with the underpinning methods of carbon accounting.Our subject will help you to develop the critical thinking skills to stay agile and informed as a future carbon accountant and industry professional.
