Acquaint yourself with traditional and modern investment theories and practices. You will learn investment evaluation theories and techniques and examination of portfolio practices. You will also explore current industry practice in this area and develop an understanding of the theoretical framework supporting investment analysis and portfolio management. Through this unit, you will gain confidence in the application of a range of techniques and develop a capacity for independent thought and critical analysis in the areas of investment analysis and portfolio management.

At the completion of this unit students will:

  1. have an understanding of the nature of an investment, the characteristics of financial assets and the investment environment
  2. be able to describe the investment management process and understand the role of objectives and strategy in the portfolio construction process
  3. be familiar with the concepts of modern portfolio theory and have an intuitive understanding of asset pricing models
  4. have an understanding of the influence of macroeconomic and microeconomic factors on securities markets and the pricing of financial assets
  5. be able to display competence in the use of various methods of fundamental analysis to value shares
  6. understand various approaches used in portfolio management
  7. have an appreciation of the role of derivative securities in portfolio management
  8. understand the issues associated with the evaluation of portfolio performance and apply various performance evaluation techniques.
