This unit provides you with a practical and theoretical understanding of health and safety in Australian workplaces. The unit examines the legal obligations in the workplace and risk management. You will have an opportunity to transfer theoretical knowledge to practice by undertaking analysis of a workplace, a practical exercise which will also require you to consider the theoretical aspects of the Workplace Health & Safety problems that you discover.

At the completion of this unit students will have:

  1. an appreciation of the key elements of a WHS management system
  2. an understanding of the main parts of the model Work Health and Safety Act
  3. the ability to apply the four steps in the risk management procedure to protect workers from hazards at work
  4. an understanding of the main types of hazards at work
  5. an appreciation of process of eliminating or controlling the risk to health and safety at work.
