This unit responds to the challenges faced by employment relations, human resource and other managers in providing equitable workplaces that comply with legislative requirements and that are required to deal effectively with an increasingly diverse workforce with a range of cultural, gender, disability, age and other differences.

The central question addressed will be: 'How can we understand the theories and practices that come under the broad headings of equity and diversity in the workplace, and what implications does this have for designing employment policies and practices that achieve equity, optimal productivity, innovation and job satisfaction outcomes?'. The unit examines legislation, policies and practices in Australia and analyses organisational policies and practices. The unit employs a combination of theoretical and experiential learning to encourage understanding of these processes, as well as practical skills in managing them.

At the completion of this unit students will demonstrate:

  1. a theoretical understanding of the literature in relation to managing diversity and the national and organisational practices which are associated with this
  2. a theoretical understanding of issues of employment equity in organisations and of relevant legislation
  3. an ability to analyse diversity issues in organisations and the strategies used to address this
  4. an ability to assess organisational responses to harness the benefits of diversity or inclusiveness in organisations.
