This unit provides an overview of copyright, design, patent and trademark legislation and an examination of how businesses can protect their intellectual property. It also introduces the common law torts of breach of confidence and passing off and some of the cultural implications associated with intellectual property rights.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. explain the international and domestic policies that underpin the protection of intellectual property rights
  2. explain the impact of international and domestic cultural perspectives on the protection of intellectual property rights
  3. analyse and interpret the relevant statutory and common law regimes that protect intellectual property rights
  4. apply relevant legal concepts and principles to analyse and solve hypothetical problems or case studies.
