Joshua reveals how he found his own path through study

What did you study at university?

After I finished Year 12, I studied a Bachelor of Exercise and Health Science with a major in physical education and a minor in psychology with one of Open Universities Australia’s partner universities, Australian Catholic University, graduating in 2019. During this degree, I explored quite a few areas like health promotion, biomechanics and sports psychology.

Since graduating, I’ve built a career in the education sector, focusing on delivering personal development workshops and operating after-school sports programs for primary and secondary school students through a not-for-profit community initiative called The Huddle.

What led you to start working for Open Universities Australia?

During the second year of my degree, I discovered my passion for tertiary education and a desire to eventually have a career in a tertiary setting. In 2022, I was exploring my options and came across an opportunity with Open Universities Australia where I could change people's lives by assisting with their university journey. It was exactly what I was looking for, and November 2025 is my 3-year anniversary!

What's your favourite part about helping students?

Whether it’s helping a student take their very first step or supporting them as they enrol in their final subject before graduation, I feel honoured to be part of their journey. What I enjoy most is equipping students with confidence and helping them feel prepared for their studies.

Why are you passionate about helping students who are interested in studying education and teaching?

I’m grateful to be in a position where I can support people who want to start or continue their career by teaching the next generation. I’ve always valued the significance of education. I’m especially proud that we’re able to bridge the gap for those who never thought studying at university was possible for them.
