About this subject
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the cultural and institutional contexts that impact the capacity and willingness of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to enact educational justice.
- Identify, critically analyse, and select local and national teaching and learning resources, pedagogies, and curriculum strategies that foster all students’ knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, history, cultural identity, linguistic diversity, and engagement in education.
- Demonstrate evidence of ethical and culturally safe teaching practices that actively support restorative justice and reconciliation, while fostering inclusive learning environments that address systemic barriers and promote educational success for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and culturally diverse students.
- Demonstrate knowledge of cultural and linguistic diversity (CALD), its impact on teaching and learning, and strategies to support EAL/D students through inclusive and responsive practices.

This subject explores the relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians, examining First Nations diversity, including language, culture, and the varied impacts of colonisation. It also considers broader cultural and linguistic diversity (CALD), including the relationship between language and culture and the educational needs of EAL/D students. It encourages critical reflection and ethical engagement with racial and social injustices to foster reconciliation, cultural safety, and inclusion through culturally and linguistically responsive curriculum, pedagogy, and practice. In doing so, it provides both a theoretical and practical grounding to develop your skills as a transformative educator, capable of connecting with community, supporting diverse learners, fostering restorative justice, and working towards reconciliation and flourishing within and through education.
