By the end of this 12-week subject, you'll be able to:
- Analyse and apply key determinants of health to priority population groups, including (but not limited to) rural and remote communities, First Nations peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, LGBTIQA+ populations, and individuals in workplace, healthcare, and school settings.
- Apply the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion and relevant behavioural theories to the design, implementation, and critique of health promotion programs.
- Create evidence-informed health promotion plans that draw on multiple theoretical frameworks and address a range of social, environmental, and behavioural determinants of health.
- Apply health promotion frameworks and theories to design context-appropriate strategies that address identified determinants of health.
- Develop health promotion plans that embed sustainability principles and outline strategies to ensure the program’s long-term continuity and impact.

This subject provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles, theories, and practices that underpin contemporary health promotion in Australia. Students explore the social, environmental, cultural, and behavioural determinants of health and examine how these determinants shape health outcomes for a wide range of priority population groups, including rural and remote communities, First Nations peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, LGBTIQA+ populations, and individuals in workplace, healthcare, and school settings. Drawing on the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, behavioural theories students will learn to analyse health issues, interpret evidence, and apply theory to real-world contexts. The subject emphasises the development of practical skills in designing, implementing, and critiquing health promotion programs, with a strong focus on cultural safety, equity, and ethical practice. Students create an evidence-informed health promotion program that integrate multiple theoretical perspectives and address complex determinants of health. They also learn to design context-appropriate strategies that respond to community needs and strengths. Sustainability is embedded throughout the subject, enabling students to develop programs that incorporate long-term planning,, are cost-effective and will encourage the goals of the program to continue to be met and to ensure the ongoing program impact. By the end of the subject, students will be equipped with the analytical, theoretical, and practical capabilities required to contribute to effective, equitable, and sustainable health promotion practice within the broader public health system.
