Torrens University Australia

You don’t need an ATAR to study with Torrens University Australia—just a passion to learn

Torrens University Australia believes there's more to you than just a number. And that an ATAR doesn't necessarily recognise your hard work, or where you shine.

Instead, the university sees your individuality, potential and past experience as a better sign of how you might succeed in higher education. As a result, Torrens University has removed the ATAR as its key admissions criteria.

Use Open Universities Australia to find out more about where this university could take you. Then compare online qualifications in business, design, technology, health, education and hospitality. Torrens University Australia was founded in 2013 through partnership with some of Australia’s most renowned education providers, namely Billy Blue College of Design, Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School, William Blue College of Hospitality Management, Chifley Business School, APM College of Business Communication and the Australasian College of Natural Therapies. These institutions were passionate about creating courses that would put people in careers they loved.

At the time it was established, Torrens University was Australia’s first new university in 20 years.

Today, the university has developed partnerships with other highly regarded education providers. It still puts employability at the centre of everything it does.

Torrens University is known for its focus on industry-led learning.

Course coordinators work with industry players to understand the skills and knowledge you will need to succeed in your field. This allows them create programs that will help you find a career you love. They ensure you gain practical experience working in your chosen industry and graduate work-ready, so you have the competitive edge to land your dream job.

The university offers the flexibility you need to study your way, by offering world-class campus facilities alongside a powerful online education platform.

Several unique courses are offered in partnership with global organisations including Real Madrid Graduate School, Chiefly Business School and Ducere.

Torrens University is also recognised as a Certified B Corporation®, which means it has a positive impact on society and the environment.

In 2022, more than 19,000 students were enrolled with Torrens University.

Torrens University is Australia’s fastest growing university. It partners with some of the most prestigious and influential organisations in Australia and around the world.

Its courses are endorsed or accredited by leading industry organisations such as The Design Institute of Australia, The Council of Academic Public Health Institutions Australasia, The Australian Computer Society, The Australian Institute of Project Management and The Australian Marketing Institute.

The Torrens University MBA program is ranked Tier-1 by CEO Magazine, with its Sports Management MBA ranking in the top 10 globally.

The university’s animation school was ranked within the top 10 in Australasia by Animation Career Review, while its hotel management program is considered number one in the region.

Torrens University ranked seventh in Australia for its teaching quality in the QILT Student Experience Survey, which was conducted by the Australian Government and released in August 2022.

The university also ranks well for graduate employability, particularly among international students. It ranks second in Australia for the overall employment of international graduates.

No, Torrens University has removed the ATAR as an entry requirement for most courses.

The university believes that the ATAR doesn’t necessarily reflect your true abilities as a student. As a result, all students with a Year 12 certificate are considered for undergraduate enrolment (there may be exceptions for some courses, so check the requirements carefully).

Those who haven’t finished Year 12 can get in through other pathways. You may be accepted through a diploma course, creative portfolio submission or student interview.

Postgraduate students will generally need a bachelor degree or previous relevant work experience to enrol.

Once you’re enrolled as an online student, you will conduct your coursework through a learning platform called Blackboard Ultra. This is where you’ll have 24/7 access to your subjects, letting you study when and where you like.

Each subject will require about 10 hours of study per week. You’ll spend 7 of those hours doing readings, exercises and assessments in your own time. During the other 3 hours, you’ll attend live tutorials and discussions. This lets you touch base with lecturers and classmates in real time.

All students, including online students, are partnered with a Success Coach—someone with experience in your industry who will be your guide throughout your studies. You can ask them for help with subject selection, internship opportunities, CV and interview preparation, plus any support services you may need. They will help you study and enter the workforce with confidence.
