About this subject
On successful completion of the subject you should be able to:
- Distinguish between the different approaches to conducting literature reviews in healthcare and apply the relevant ethical guidelines to support the integrity of the review process
- Understand the purpose and structure of literature reviews and clearly explain their significance to inform the development of research studies in healthcare and health education.
- Use a systematic approach to locate, appraise, analyse, and synthesise published literature relevant to their intended thesis topic.
- Reflects on feedback from a range of sources and integrates into the development of the literature review.
- Defining a topic/problem for the literature review;
- Systematic approaches for searching the literature;
- Techniques to describe, analyse and critique relevant literature;
- Theoretical and methodological considerations for undertaking a literature review;
- Academic writing; academic integrity skills.
This unit equips students with the essential skills and knowledge required to complete a literature review to explore relevant professional practice issues.
Throughout the unit, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the purpose and significance of a literature review within the context of healthcare or health education. They will learn advanced techniques to identify, synthesise, and critically evaluate research that is pertinent to their proposed research topic or problem.
Students will engage in a systematic process of gathering and analysing relevant health, education or clinical focused literature, developing the ability to construct a coherent and well-structured literature review. This process will involve rigorous critical thinking and analytical skills, enabling students to identify gaps, trends, and debates within the existing body of knowledge. Throughout the unit, students will adhere to academic standards and ethical guidelines, ensuring the integrity and scholarly value of their work.
