About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Demonstrate application of health information management skills through supervised engagement in activities which build upon academic studies and previous placement and experiences, including the ability to work independently, professionally, and ethically.
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of health information at agency level, and its collection and applications for clinical and other purposes.
- Reflect on current theory and practice and compare and contrast processes across health care agencies translating knowledge into new contexts and demonstrate a commitment to life-long learning.
- Extract and analyse health data (which may include the allocation of ICD-10-AM codes according to state and national protocols).
- Demonstrate skills in project and time management, including development and achievement of objectives, effective participation in multidisciplinary team environments and high-level communication using a wide range of mediums.

In this subject, you will further develop your health information practice knowledge and skills through engagement in supervised professional practice placements in healthcare and related agencies across the whole-of-health. The purpose of the subject is to enable you to apply theoretical knowledge to practice, and to consolidate learning from previous professional practice placements. You will undertake 32 days of placement and complete a range of academic assessments. Regular contact with University supervisors is maintained during placements via telephone, email and on-site visits. As this is a course capstone placement subject, it must be completed by all students. No advanced standing is available. To meet professional competency requirements students must pass both the professional placement and academic components of the subject.
Recommended for students who have completed all first- and second-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.
- Reflective Practice assignment (1500 words) (10%)
- Individual report (1500 words) (25%)
- 15 minute individual oral presentation including abstract (1500 words equivalent) (15%)
- 2 hour written HIM competency examination (2000 words equivalent) To meet professional competency requirements, students must pass the exam. (50%)
- Hurdle requirements: pre-placement briefing attendance, compliance with pre-placement documentation and immunisation requirements, successful completion of 32 days on placement (0%)
