About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Compare the organisational structure and functions of Health Information Services and demonstrate how these affect the role of the health information manager, information systems, policies and procedures, and day-to-day staff and departmental management.
- Explain the capture, use, and reporting of clinical information applied to support patient/client care, and associated privacy issues and the operational processes of health records management and patient/client information systems.
- Review and practice clinical governance and quality management activities (i.e., auditing) of the Health Information Service.
- Demonstrate: i. disease and procedure classification skills, using patient records; and ii. a practical understanding of casemix-based systems with particular regard to DRG assignment.
- Maintain high professional ethical standards and demonstrate awareness of the social and ethical implications of professional and personal activities, skills in health business communication genre, and ability to work in multidisciplinary team environments, necessary for the management of a Health Information Service.

In this subject you will undertake theoretical studies at the University, and a three-week (equivalent) supervised, professional practice placement in the Health Information Service of an allocated, regional healthcare facility. You will achieve practice competencies and reinforce professional discipline knowledge. You will undertake key functions on placement to gain understanding of the management, informatics, data analysis, and clinical classificatory roles of hospital health information managers. Prior to placement, you are introduced to the functional components of a Health Information Service and the responsibilities of Health Information Managers in relation to the management of health records, building on the knowledge gained in HIM1003 and developing skills in a related health business communication genre.
This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours, this means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates. This subject is recommended for second-year undergraduate students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.
Hospital on-site placements are a core requirement for all students regardless of the instance (blended or online) in which you are enrolled. To meet professional competency requirements students must pass both the professional placement and academic components of the subject.
- Two Individual quizzes (500 words or 30 minutes each) equivalent to 1000 words or 60 minutes in total (30%)
- 10-minute team oral presentation with associated documents (750 words per student equivalent) (30%)
- Placement portfolio, individual report (2,000-words equivalent). Pass is required to demonstrate appropriate understanding of placement. (40%)
- Hurdle requirements: pre-placement briefing attendance, compliance with pre-placement documentation and immunisation requirements, successful completion of 15 days (112.5 hours) on placement (0%)
