The subject explores contemporary issues of culture, equity, values and social justice in early childhood pedagogy. The subject proposes an image of the child as a citizen with rights, and students analyse the impact of this image in curriculum decision-making. The subject promotes a view of early childhood settings as democratic forums: students critically redress inequalities and create welcoming spaces for children, educators and families of diverse cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and practices. Students articulate their roles as advocates for children’s rights and are encouraged to reconceptualise their views on families, gender, language and sexual identity to further consolidate an ethical approach to the profession of educator.
