About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge acquisition and development of literacy (skills, knowledge) in relation to children’s affective dispositions and identities.
- examine and critique theoretical perspectives, including sociocultural and cognitive processes, for the teaching, learning and assessment of reading and writing and how they respond to the learning strengths and needs of students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
- design and justify teaching, learning and assessment for teaching reading and writing linked to relevant curricula for young children.
- set teaching and learning goals for teaching reading and writing that provide achievable challenges for children of varying abilities and characteristics.

This subject is about teaching English in the Primary years. The focus of this subject is on pre-service teachers developing an in-depth understanding of teaching children to read and write. Teaching reading and writing will be situated in the context of understanding different perspectives and theories about how children become literate. This subject will prepare pre-service teachers with knowledge of the multiple components to inform the comprehensive identification of children’s skills as readers and writers at various stages of their development. In addition, the subject will provide pre-service teachers with the basis for creating rich learning experiences for children.
