Bachelor of Information Technology

Upon completion of this degree, students will be able to:

1. Design, develop, test, and deliver computer programs and digital technology to solve complex problems, both individually and collaboratively.
2. Apply modern technology development and analysis tools, skills, and practices to create, analyse, and evolve technology systems.
3. Understand and apply principles of abstraction in the design of technology systems.
4. Apply ethical and security considerations to technology development, with due consideration for impacts on others and society.
5. Communicate and collaborate effectively with others.
6. Demonstrate well-developed knowledge and critical analytical skills in at least one relevant disciplinary area, with an ability to extend knowledge and analytical skills into other relevant disciplinary areas.

The Bachelor of Information Technology enables students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the field, fostering the development of technical skills and critical thinking necessary to solve complex problems in the digital field. The course is aimed at practically-oriented students but has a significant body of knowledge in common with the Bachelor of Computer Science to enable students to move between the two degrees. The core elements of the degree compactly cover the essential body of knowledge for computing graduates, including skills in a variety of programming languages. Majors within the degree develop students' skills within their chosen specialism, whether that be software development, the design of systems that collect and analyse data from the physical world, or more general roles in the design and governance of information systems.

Award requirements

Candidates who meet the course requirements and complete 144 credit points as outlined in the Program of Study shall be awarded the Bachelor of Information Technology.

Choose your subjects

Majors

Students are required to complete 1, or may complete 2, of the following Majors comprising of 8 subjects per Major:

• Information Systems and Cyber-security
• Analytics and the Internet of Things
• Software Development

NOTE: Student completing two Majors may complete a maximum of 2 subjects at 400 level. Students completing two Majors may replace overlapping subjects in one Major with 300 level subjects from another Major within the course.

Electives

Students completing one Major are required to complete 8 elective subjects.

Elective subjects can be selected from any 100, 200 and 300 level subject offered by the University, with no more than 4 subjects at 100 level and at least 2 subjects at 300 level, subject to candidates meeting overall course requirements and prerequisite and timetabling requirements for individual units.

Exit points

Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in Information Technology or the Diploma in Science on completion of 48 credit points or the Advanced Diploma in Science on completion of 72 credit points.
