Award requirements
To qualify for the Bachelor of Information Technology, students must complete 108 units, comprising:
- Core topics (81 units) covering programming, software development, databases, cybersecurity, computer networks, and professional skills.
- Elective topics (27 units) which may include additional computing areas, business, mathematics, or innovation studies.
All topics are worth 4.5 units unless stated otherwise. Students must achieve a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 or higher across all topics to qualify for the award.
Exit points
Students who do not wish to complete the full Bachelor of Information Technology may be eligible to exit with:
- Diploma of Information Technology – after successful completion of 36 units; or
- Associate Degree of Information Technology – after successful completion of 72 units.
These qualifications provide an opportunity to gain a recognised credential while progressing toward, or exiting early from, the full bachelor’s degree.

Entry requirements
To be accepted into this course, applications must meet at least one of the following entry requirements:
- Year 12 completion (or equivalent qualification), or
- TAFE/VET qualification, or
- Higher Education study, or
- Approved Foundation Studies program.
Assumed knowledge
- Mathematics, and familiarity with using computers and technology.
*Applicants who have completed a Bachelor of Information Technology; Bachelor of Computer Science; or a specialisation in Cybersecurity within the last 3 years from date of commencement of the course are not eligible to apply.
The Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature. Applicants who do not hold a bachelor's degree but have relevant professional experience in the public sector should provide employment experience information in their application.
Flinders University conducts an English Language proficiency check on applications submitted for consideration to its courses.
This will be met in a number of ways, including if the applicants:
- first language is English (i.e. citizenship is held for a country where English is the official language).
- completed secondary schooling in Australia.
- completed prior study in English (e.g. a Certificate IV or higher from a recognised Australian training institution).
- completed one semester of full-time equivalent tertiary study at a higher education institution.
- completed a recognised Foundation Studies or bridging program.
- performance in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) meets the University's admissions requirements.
- registered with an Australian professional registration body relevant to the applicant's proposed course (e.g. applicant holds current registration as a Registered Nurse, General Practitioner, Teacher, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker and such in Australia).
- achieved a score within an international English language proficiency test such as IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or Cambridge CAE that meets the minimum proficiency for the university.
- completed an approved English language course from a registered English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) Provider.
In some instances, applicants may be asked to provide evidence they meet the requirements if the information required is not available in their application.
You may be eligible for credit transfer or recognition of prior learning (RPL) if you have previously completed tertiary study, TAFE qualifications, or relevant professional experience in information technology or related fields.
Flinders University assesses prior learning on a case-by-case basis in accordance with university policy. Approved credit may reduce the overall duration or cost of your degree.

Study method requirements
While there are no compulsory placements in the Bachelor of Information Technology, students have the opportunity to undertake industry placements or professional projects as part of elective or capstone topics.

There are no formal prerequisites for entry into the Bachelor of Information Technology. However, students are expected to:
- Have reliable access to a computer with a stable internet connection, as the course is delivered fully online.
- Be prepared to engage with programming, mathematics, and logical problem-solving as part of the curriculum.
Some topics may require specific software or tools, which will be provided or made available through Flinders University’s online learning systems.
