Reflecting on Violence

Asian Pop Culture

This subject examines competing accounts of violence in the academic research, mass media, and everyday conversation. It asks why the news media focuses on extreme cases of violence, and how this produces social panics around particular problems while concealing other more serious issues. It shows how patterns of everyday talk about violence cause people to worry about specific risks to their safety and not others, and why anxieties about violence often lead to demands for certain kinds of law enforcement. The subject explores how accounts of violence in even non-scholarly cultural forms like films and television series, are actually based on complex underlying theories of psychology and society. Even in apparently neutral and objective academic research, it reveals a range of unrecognised assumptions that shape how we understand the world. The subject includes a focus on violence and gender, examining changing ways of understanding sexual and intimate-partner violence, and exploring issues of masculinity and violence.This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

This subject teaches the techniques of audio news writing and explores podcasting and the use of sound in storytelling. Through the production of news bulletins and individual podcasts you will develop interviewing, recording, voice presentation and editing skills. The subject also covers how to create, develop and tell stories in the context of a podcast, including how to write to audio, and how to develop and practice presenting skills to enable the production of compelling podcasts. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation in either weekly online or face-to-face tutorials. These classes may fall in business hours.

Podcasting

This subject takes a broad interdisciplinary approach to engage with and critique various elements of popular culture across East Asia, South Asia and South East Asia. You will reflect on what makes something &#39;popular&#39; across five categories: film, fashion, music, novels and media mixes, and anime/ manga. These categories are explored in terms of, for example, nationalism, religion, education, technology, media, and language.This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject enrolment requirements before enrolling in this subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
