The Craft of Academic Writing

French Cinema

In this subject, you will improve your skills in writing effectively for academic purposes. You will learn some essential principles of grammar and style, with a practical focus on essay writing. The subject progresses from fundamentals of sentence and paragraph structure through to researching and constructing an academic essay. It provides guidance on the ethics of writing by teaching the conventions of referencing. The subject is suitable to undertake in a wide range of courses. The communication skills that it develops will assist your academic studies and are transferable to diverse professional contexts.

Health professionals need advanced communication skills to effectively share complex and sensitive information and advice with clients, families and professional colleagues. Studying this subject will help to equip you with the verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills required to succeed as a health or social care professional. With an emphasis on self-awareness and self-reflection, this subject allows you to develop and apply your communication skills for a health and social care context. You will identify goals and strategies for communication in health and social care, and examine the importance of communicating in ethnically and culturally appropriate ways. You will also have opportunities to analyse your personal communication style to better understand how this affects professional communication with both clients and colleagues.

Communication for Health Professionals

Creative writing is a process that draws on experience, research, craft, feedback and revision. This subject is an introduction to writing creative narratives. It will introduce you to essential storytelling techniques and provide a vocabulary for understanding the craft of constructing narratives that reflect genre conventions and reader expectations. You will learn skills in creative writing through constructing a story that is inspired by a theme such as place. In this subject you will be guided through the stages of developing an idea, designing, drafting and editing a story. You will explore how selected authors portray places, events, characters and themes. Build your confidence with storytelling and enhance your writing skills within a supportive and flexible university learning environment at UNE.

Storytelling and Genre Writing

This subject was previously known as Ideas of Theatre II.The theatre is a reflection of the views and perspectives of the world around us.  This introductory subject will provide an overview of the artistic, philosophical, and political ideas underpinning theatre practice in the western world from the late nineteenth century to the present day, with a focus on playwrights and directors.  You will learn how theatre-makers during this period undertook bold theatrical experiments in response to significant social, cultural and political upheavals. Through studying key plays and practitioners from this period, you will develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the relationship between play text, director and performance, and have the opportunity to create your own piece of innovative theatre.There is a non-mandatory 3 day intensive school for this subject which students may choose to attend. Starts 10am on the first day. Finishes at 4pm on the final day. Dates for this intensive school to be advised.

Making Theatre New

This subject was previously known as Ideas of Theatre I.The theatre is a place where society’s values are reflected; and from an understanding of the past, we can track the future. This subject investigates theatre and performance from its origins in ritual and the ancient Greek theatre to the emergence of realism. In this subject you will explore seminal play texts and their socio-cultural/political/historical perspectives, with a focus on the role of the actor. The ability to identify inherited theatre tradition, the key junctures in the progress of content and form, and the advancement of theatre as an art-form, is foundational to the contemporary practitioner. This subject is both practical and analytical; you will explore the body and the voice in performance, demonstrating an understanding of the contribution of the actor to the theatre event. You will also learn to read and write about theatre as a performance. You can take this subject as part of your theatre studies or as a stand-alone subject.

Performance From Ritual to Realism

Businesses rely on people working together to achieve a common goal. This practical subject will equip you with the skills to interact individually, and collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders in professional situations. Studying this subject you will hone your communication skills. You will explore the role of communication, creativity and professional identity in business, and apply this knowledge to business problems. This subject will help you to lay the foundations for developing your own professional identity as a confident, capable and reliable businessperson, ready to respond to opportunities and challenges in the workplace.

Communication for Business

French cinema is one of the most historically and culturally significant national cinemas in the world. Beginning with the early silent period of the late 19th century, which marks the origins of cinema as it is known today, in this subject you will also survey some of the most significant movements of French cinema; from the experimental films of the Surrealists and the Nouvelle Vague, to the gritty depictions of city life of New Realism. You will be provided with foundational knowledge of French film theory and criticism, together with background information on the socio-political context of film production in France. The subject will be taught in English with all prescribed films having English subtitles. For this reason, the subject is open to all students with an interest in film, and not just those who are majoring in French.

Explore the language and culture of France through the lens of this important national cinema. Get critical about techniques and themes. See significant movements in French society depicted on screen, including Nouvelle Vague and New Realism. 

Our understandings and perceptions of crime and the criminal justice system are largely informed by the media and popular culture. This subject investigates how media representations shape public opinion, political policy and criminal justice practices. Students will assess mainstream and alternative sources of media and how these differing sources present and challenge key crime stories. The emerging role of social media will occupy a key role in the subject, including the use of social media by: police to solve crimes and connect with the community, citizens to broadcast state violence and vigilante collectives (such as &#39;Anonymous&#39;) to present perceived failures of justice.

Crime, Media and Culture

Integral to communication today are what are known as the creative industries. In this subject the creative industries are explored as an area of employment associated with certain work and career patterns. They are also seen to intersect with many other contexts where communication, research and creativity are valued.When studying this subject you will explore the nature, processes and products of these industries, with case studies ranging from film, television and new screens to writing and publishing.You will undertake practical activities which study the processes through which cultural products are made and circulated in the digital communications environment.The subject aims to equip you with knowledge and skills relevant to the creative industries and transferable to the diverse work and community contexts of the future.

Creative Industries

The media is a rapidly evolving global industry. To future proof your career in the changing media climate, you need a range of skills and an ability to adapt. In this subject you will focus on screen media, it being the most diverse and prevalent media we are exposed to in everyday life. You will explore the creative language of film and television and learn a range of terms for studying genres and the art of storytelling in audio-visual media. You will analyse feature films and television, and the changing content and ways of watching television. This subject will give you the foundation of methods and skills necessary for researching and studying screen media in varied forms and contexts.
