Introduction to Quantitative Skills

Quantitative Skills with Applications

Advanced calculus techniques are an essential tool for scientists modelling complex systems, from electromagnetic oscillations to the spread of infectious diseases. Integrating with other offerings in calculus and linear algebra this subject not only provides you with methods applied across the natural and social sciences but also with a theoretical foundation allowing you to pursue further study in mathematics. You will explore topics with broad applications, including linear mappings (determinant and eigenvectors), further techniques of integration and improper integrals, infinite series and Taylor series, parametric equations and implicit equations, and basic differential equations.

Calculus and Linear Algebra 2

In an increasingly data-driven world, the importance of quantitative skills has never been greater. This subject is ideal if you do not have a strong mathematical background or you would like a refresher in foundational topics. Developing your mathematical understanding of core quantitative skills and the importance of mathematics to science, this subject will empower you to confidently apply basic mathematics as a scientist, and ensures you have the knowledge needed for beginner-level university maths. Building on topics from NSW’s HSC General Mathematics (or equivalent), we start with a solid foundation in algebraic concepts and functions before moving on to more advanced subject. You will learn to graph functions and solve a range of equations (e.g. linear, quadratic, polynomial and rational, trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic), and find and apply inverse functions. Other topics include working with fractions and percentages, and rules for indices/powers.

Learn the basics of maths in relation to science – or refresh your knowledge – allowing you to become confident in a scientific environment. Cover algebraic concepts, fractions, linear functions, graphs, power and root functions and more.

Multivariable calculus has diverse applications across many fields, from modelling and studying dynamic systems in engineering and social science, to analysing and forecasting stock market activity.  This subject builds on your understanding of the basic concepts of single variable calculus, generalising these concepts to functions of two or more variables.  Focusing on both theoretical and technical aspects, you will explore basic geometrical topics on curves and surfaces in relation to multivariable functions. You will also examine limits and continuity, differentiability and partial derivatives, inverse and implicit mapping theorems, multivariable Taylor formula, extreme values, double and triple integrals, line integrals and the integral theorems.  Applying your knowledge to fluid dynamics and using the principles of multivariable calculus, the unit will help you to fine tune your ability to solve complex real-world mathematical problems.

For example, growth of both cell populations and money can be modelled using exponential functions.  Introducing you to the universality of mathematics, this subject emphasises your development of good mathematical intuition and technical problem solving.  Studying this subject, you will learn how to develop, understand, and apply mathematical models.  Topics include a review of functions and graphing, exponential, logarithmic, inverse, and trigonometric functions and equations, solving systems of linear equations using matrices.  Intended to build on the NSW HSC Mathematics course (or equivalent) or UNE’s Introduction to Quantitative Skills, the subject provides you with an invaluable foundation for a wide range of science-based courses or for further study of calculus-based mathematics units.

In the rapidly changing world of information technology and computer science, a solid understanding of the mathematical concepts underpinning different branches of these sciences adds an invaluable dimension to your knowledge. Discrete mathematics provides you with the foundation needed for studies in computer science and mathematics, helping you to think mathematically and use logic and reasoning to solve complex problems. Studying this subject, you will explore the general themes of discrete mathematics: logic and proof, induction and recursion, discrete structures and graphs, as well as algorithm design and efficiency analysis. Focusing on traditional and emerging real-world applications of the discipline, you will learn about digital logic circuits and number systems, cryptography, finding minimum spanning trees and shortest paths in graphs, analysing the efficiency of searching and sorting algorithms, and topological sorting for scheduling.
