The Bachelor of Global Logistics and Maritime Management provides graduates with high-level expertise and knowledge to understand the maritime business in the global arena, the world-wide spanning logistics services and strategies, as well as the structuring, operation and coordination of supply chains. The maritime and logistics industries underpin international business and world trade, a key element in sustainable development. These industries are tightly interconnected with human society; physically, socially and economically. As such their management is critical, requiring highly trained individuals and teams to lead the development, implementation and control of sound contemporary management practices.The Bachelor of Global Logistics and Maritime Management is a nested programme that includes entry and exit award for the Diploma of Global Logistics and Maritime Management and the Associate Degree (Global Logistics and Maritime Management). This subject provides you with a broad appreciation of the nature and importance of logistics activities, and introduces you to the most important concepts, principles, tools, and analytical skills used by logistics managers. It enables you to understand the key components of an integrated logistics system, such as procurement, inventory management, transport, warehousing, and customer services, whilst viewing the system synergistically. Central to an integrated logistics system is the customers: by studying the trade-offs between customer services and costs discussed in this subject, you will be able to contribute positively to the logistics management activities in any organisation.

Logistics Management

This subject provides a broad appreciation of the nature and importance of logistics activities and an understanding of the key concepts and tools used by logistics managers. The subject enables an examination of the key components of an integrated logistics system, such as inventory management and transport, whilst viewing the system holistically. Central to an integrated logistics system is the customer; by studying the trade-offs between customer service and costs in this subject, you will be able to contribute positively to the decision-making in the logistics management activities in any company.

Business Logistics

This subject provides students with a good understanding of individual sectors in the maritime industry. It introduces the maritime industry’s history, maritime geography and the concept of maritime transport in facilitating international trade. This subject covers various maritime sectors such as shipping, shipbuilding, repairs and maintenance, ports, offshore energy, maritime tourism, maritime governance and defence and Law enforcement. Finally, key contemporary issues related to the maritime industry are addressed.

Introduction to the Maritime Industry

The aim of this subject is to examine the processes, functions and strategies required by organisations to acquire goods, services and equipment from other organisations. The subject covers three broad dimensions of the procurement function within organisations. Firstly, the subject familiarises you with the procurement processes employed by organisations in both the public and private sectors. Secondly, the subject discusses strategic decision-making in a range of procurement-related issues that have a direct impact on how an organisation operates. Thirdly, the subject examines the supplier-related tasks of purchasing professionals, including supplier selection and management.

Global Procurement

This subject will provide you with an understanding of how organisations manage the supply chain and logistics processes associated with manufactured and purchased goods, ensuring the successful flow of materials between organisations and external suppliers. The logistics aspects and methodologies you will be exposed to include manufacturing demand planning, inventory and stock control, packaging, warehousing, distribution networks, transportation, value chains and managing supplier relationships. You will also consider how current and future use of technologies and automated processes in the logistics environment can be utilised to achieve logistics improvements for the organisation. In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject builds on concepts of learning through practice in Year 1 of study by introducing you to more complex learning experiences. You will be introduced to:- discipline-based skills and knowledge in dynamic practice situations. This will include authentic and purposeful, industry-related experiences - concepts of managing effective relationships and communicating with others - the development and use of adaptive leadership skills and how these skills relate to innovative and entrepreneurial practice- the nature of responsible, accountable and reflective workplace skills, and creative and critical thinking relevant to para-professional practice.You will exercise self-awareness, initiative and judgement to manage yourself and professional relationships effectively. The application of tacit knowledge and capabilities will be reflected in a Practice Manual.

Supply Chain and Logistics Management

This subject introduces students to the best management practices for dealing with the ship-shore interface and will provide the skills and knowledge necessary to assume an operations management role. Topics covered include: the role of port authorities and legislative matters; the regulations and codes governing vessel operations within a port; Harbour Master&#39;s powers and Harbour Master&#39;s Directions; the technical aspects of port operations, including mooring, berthing and anchoring operations, cargo handling equipment and storage, handling and transfer of various cargo types; environmental and safety aspects of port operations.

Harbour Operations and Services

The subject familiarises you with the complex logistical requirements resulting from digital business and e-commerce. The subject starts by examining the emerging business practices, systems, and technologies, which enable order fulfilment in this rapidly evolving space. It then examines how the functions of materials handling and transportation provide crucial digital business and e-commerce value through supply chain collaboration. Along the way, the subject also examines the logistics strategies, operations and infrastructure needed to meet the growing challenge of customer satisfaction in digital business and e-commerce distribution activities. By the end of the subject, you will be better prepared to apply logistical knowledge to support and make improvements in digital business and e-commerce.This subject has linkages to JNB522 Business Logistics, and JNB624 Supply Chain Management. Knowledge from the two subject can be brought into play as you go through this subject study.

eCommerce Logistics Management

The Dissertation subjects are designed to provide high-level business research skills to final year students who have a personal interest in research. The dissertation builds on a number of disciplines studied in the program and on the awareness of issues that the maritime and logistics industries face globally, in part due to the intense competition and increasing customer demands. Successful completion of this subject requires prior knowledge of research methods.A dissertation is equivalent to three subjects of coursework. The dissertation is to be completed over two or more semesters, after completion of the Research Methods subject.The dissertation program consists of three parts with individual subject codes as follows:• Dissertation Part 1/3 (TAS-JNB718): Research proposal development and literature review• Dissertation Part 2/3 (TAS-JNB721): Data collection and analysis• Dissertation Part 3/3 (TAS-JNB722): Report writing and presentationThe three subjects are interdependent and must be taken as one integrated subject under the designation of dissertation. They must be completed sequentially throughout the semester(s) and not as normal subjects which are assessed at the end of the semester. There will be no grade for each individual subject; instead, a grade of XX is shown for Parts 1 (TAS-JNB718) and 2 (TAS-JNB721).
