This subject is available to students who have no knowledge of Japanese. It is an introductory subject focusing on elementary spoken and written Japanese. You will learn to read hiragana and katakana syllabic scripts as well as approximately 30 kanji characters. You will also be introduced to Japanese culture. Culture is embedded throughout language, so learning another language develops your intercultural communication skills, preparing you to be responsive and agile in varied situations. Those who have prior learning of Japanese should contact the Japanese Program coordinator for a placement test (k.okano@latrobe.edu.au). You may be asked to move to another level by the subject coordinator prior to the university census date (usually in week 3 or 4). JPN1001 is offered as a semester one and semester two subject. The follow-on subject, JPN1002, is only offered in semester two. For those who wish to undertake JPN1002 as a follow-on subject, your options are to take JPN1001 in semester one and JPN1002 in semester two OR to take JPN1001 in semester two and JPN1002 in semester two in the following year. The lecture is delivered online, live, and recorded and uploaded to LMS.

Japanese 1

In this subject, you will reflect on how society and culture shapes language use and communication between individuals and between groups. Drawing on a range of ideas from the fields of intercultural communication, sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology, students develop tools, knowledge and awareness to assist them in understanding and positively engaging with the linguistic and cultural diversity around them.

Language, Society And Culture

In this subject you will be introduced to the essential building blocks of language: the sounds and sound systems (phonetics and phonology), how words and sentences are structured (morphology and syntax)and how we understand meaning (semantics). Employing the analytical tools of linguistics, you will begin applying them to the development of a new language of your own imagining. The inspiration will come from a range of human languages, including major world languages, minoritized and endangered languages, and constructed languages.This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Imagining Language

What is language? Where did it come from, how do we learn it, and what do we use it for? This subject introduces students to a range of basic topics in the study of language: how to define language, the basic structure of language, language in the brain, how to distinguish languages from dialects, how language might have evolved, how children and adults acquire language, how and why languages change, and how language conveys social and cultural meaning, and different modalities of language (speech and sign).This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Foundations of Language

This subject is based around developing the skills you need to read modern Hindi texts. By using texts as exemplars of contemporary Hindi language and perspectives on South Asian society, the subject will enable you to access a wide range of modern Hindi usages. You will read modern texts on topics such as the partition of India and Pakistan, traditional urban and rural lifestyles, and contemporary issues related to the caste system. You will also explore issues related to vocabulary, usage and idiom. In addition the subject will focus on the development of active language skills in both oral and written forms. It is recommended that student take AST2MMA with this subject.This is a level 2 and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

The world&#39;s extraordinary linguistic diversity is under threat, and the sustainability of the many smaller languages of the world is an urgent issue. In this subject we examine the diversity of human language and the extent of diversity in syntactic structures. Deeper knowledge of the complex interactions expressed by linguistic diversity will assist you to understand the challenges facing the sustainability of our existing linguistic diversity. You will learn the skills needed to describe the syntactic structures of languages and thus help contribute to sustaining linguistic diversity.This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Syntactic Diversity in a Connected World

This subject examines the speech sounds of world&#39;s languages, including variation and change in the sounds. You will learn how to describe and analyse language sounds, and will work with a speaker to document their language. The subject is practical in focus with significant application of theory to data.  Topics covered include consonants, vowels, tones, stress, and phonological typology.This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

The Sounds of the World's Languages

This subject focuses on how people understand communication through language. In particular, it explores how words, sentences, utterances and texts are used make meaning or do something in a certain context. A range of theoretical approaches and analytical tools used in the study of semantics and pragmatics will be introduced and applied.This is a level 2 subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Making Meaning

In this continuing beginner level language subject, you will focus on the four key elements of Japanese -reading, writing, listening and speaking. Building on the knowledge gained in JPN1001, this unit brings the total number of kanji learnt to approximately 90. You will will deepen your understanding of Japanese language and culture, and Japan&#39;s place in the world. Culture is embedded throughout language, so learning another language develops your intercultural communication skills, preparing you to be responsive and agile in varied situations.

Japanese 2

This subject focuses on a range of materials related to Indian Cinema, both in terms of films, dialogues, songs, magazines and reviews. Teaching will be in a 3 hour workshop format and we will be looking at a number of links to Hindi film related clips on YouTube such as short documentaries, interviews, clips, trailers, and award ceremonies. In addition there will be a weekly passage to read from a Hindi film magazine. There will also be opportunities to watch films and discuss their content.This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
