The Bachelor of Science allows you to follow a path to suit your intended career in the sciences. You will undertake an in-depth study of the Biology  – the study of all living things, encompassing diverse subdisciplines, including cell and developmental biology, behaviour, biodiversity, conservation, ecology, genetics, microbiology, anatomy and physiology. You&#39;ll learn about the function and processes that influence the ecology and evolution of organisms. You’ll consider taxa ranging from microbes to fungi, plants and animals, with a focus on Australia’s unique biodiversity. This popular area of biology encompasses all aspects of what it is to be human, including genetics, anatomy, physiology, anthropology, ecology and epidemiology. Core units in the degree will address the quantitative skills needed by all scientists. Scientists need to be able to understand, analyze and communicate data.Critical employability skills will be addressed both in the core units and through embedded learning in the discipline units of the majors.The course integrates real-world learning activities, culminating in a Science Capstone unit.By providing both in-depth discipline education as well as the broader skills required by all scientists the degree will provide a world-class science education.The Bachelor of Science will help you develop skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking through practical work and peer-assisted learning. Bachelor of Science (Earth and Environmental Systems and Marine Systems)

Successful completion of the Diploma will guarantee you entry and up to eight units of credit towards linked specialisations in the Southern Cross Bachelor of Science.Graduates may also find work in para-professional roles, including positions as field assistants, laboratory assistants and environmental monitoring officers.This course is offered through SCU College, where we recognise our students may have different approaches to learning. Master of Bioinformatics

The Associate Degree in Applied Science is an industry-focused program designed for people interested in working in fields that require specialised skills and knowledge of applied science principles and processes, including those who may never have considered a career in science. The stream available under this program is Fermentation and Separation.The Fermentation and Separation stream has been developed for people interested in working in innovative food and beverage industries such as brewing, winemaking, fermented food and drink production. The stream also prepares graduates to learn about the premium bio-industries (essential oils, seaweed based fertilisers, poppies, pyrethrum and biodiesel). Core subjects include applied biology, applied chemistry, data and analysis, quality management and sustainability, which are integrated with stream subjects such as applied microbiology and fermentation principles and processes. Throughout the program, students can choose four elective subjects to develop their areas of interest.A key feature of the program is the practical component, to provide hands-on learning which aims to enhance students’ problem solving, communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills by allowing them to ‘learn through practice’. Industry experts have helped to develop the program and are actively involved in the delivery through teaching, site visits, case studies and work placements. As a result, graduates will be considered ‘workplace ready’ after two years of (full-time) study. The program is available for full-time and part-time study and is delivered through a combination of online study, practical workshops and tutorials. Graduates of the Associate Degree in Applied Science will have: a pathway to a great career in their chosen field with practical skills to take straight into the workplace and the opportunity to undertake further study at the University of Tasmania.

In this subject, you will first be introduced to concepts fundamental to the understanding of Human Physiology such as the organisation of the human body, homeostasis, basic cell structure and function, body fluids and the movement of molecules within body fluid compartments. The basics of nervous system and endocrine system function in the context of physiological regulation and homeostasis will then be explored. This information will provide the foundation for the study of major organ systems of the body including the muscular, digestive, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, renal, and reproductive systems. This subject will also include content on metabolism of nutrients and acid-base homeostasis.

Introduction to Human Physiology

This subject serves as an introduction to the human body and key organ systems. It begins with anatomical terminology and the relationships between body cells, tissues and organs. Key cell processes such as respiration, protein synthesis, and cell division will be covered. Students will then explore the basic function and control of the circulatory, respiratory, digestive and excretory systems, and how these systems contribute to the changing needs of the human body. The subject includes exploration of the lymphatic and immune systems and how they provide defence against microorganisms. Introduction to Anatomy

Human cell biology and homeostasis will also be investigated. Introductory of epidemiology will be discussed.Please Note: This subject cannot be used as credit towards a university degree. Biological and Learning Psychology

In this subject, you are introduced to the study of anatomy. An overview of anatomical terminology, basic tissue types and a variety of techniques used to visualize the human body will be given followed by a more detailed study of the anatomy of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Anatomical principles and terminology will be applied to relevant body systems and the concept of integrated function of multiple systems in one body region will be introduced through the study of the trunk. You will be taught via an online-only OR blended (on-line and face-to-face) approach.

Human Biosciences B

This subject introduces you to human physiology - how the body works. You&#39;ll learn how the body is organised and the basics of cell structure and function, and how processes in the body are controlled. This will provide the foundation for the study of the major body systems important for support and movement (muscular system); regulation, integration and control (nervous and endocrine systems); fluids and transport (blood, heart, cardiovascular and immune systems); energy, maintenance and environmental exchange (respiratory, digestive and renal systems, metabolism); and the continuity of life (reproductive systems).

This subject serves as an introduction to the biological bases of behaviour. Nerve cells are the basic building blocks of the brain. Therefore their functioning and methods of communicating form the basic principles of brain and nervous system functioning. Hence this subject includes introductory lectures on the elements of the nervous system that contribute to the conscious and unconscious aspects of behaviour. There is an emphasis on understanding how the cells of the nervous system function and communicate with each other, thus allowing us to explain how sensory information, drugs, and hormonal changes influence behaviour, as well as how behaviour influences the brain.

Introduction To Behavioural Neuroscience 1A

This introductory subject will explore the physical and cognitive changes that occur during the ageing process, and age-related pathological changes that can lead to diseases that cause dementia. This subject will introduce fundamental neuroscience concepts in the healthy adult, ageing and diseased nervous systems, with a focus on brain structure and function. Throughout this subject, students will learn how to find scholarly literature, and how to recognise and summarise scientific evidence to use in their academic communication.
