The postgraduate programs in Geographic Information Science produce high-quality graduates with both technical and research skills in advanced areas of geographic information science. Graduates are competent in basic and advanced computing skills, especially in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software; various GIS and remote sensing operations; and implementation and management of GIS projects.The program also covers applications of GIS and remote sensing technologies to various areas; resource analysis through remote sensing and airphoto interpretation; expert systems and decision support systems; and research, both applied and theoretical, in the field of spatial information systems.

Study advanced Geographic Information Science (GIS) – covering electives such as spatial analysis, remote-sensing and web mapping. Complete a research project to build on project management skills for the real world. Finish in 2 years.  

Master of Geographic Information Science

This subject provides an introduction and exploration of the main principles of physical geography applied to urban, rural and regional environments. A range of topics are examined in relation to both natural and human environmental processes. The subject recognises and appreciates diverse indigenous knowledges of physical landscapes. A strong fieldwork component provides opportunities for problem-based learning in professions that require a broad understanding of physical geography, such as education, rural and urban Landcare, environmental planning and geotourism. Australia is being influenced by far-reaching economic, demographic and social processes, many of which originate elsewhere in the globe.  In this subject you will explore the ways in which Australian urban and rural regions are being impacted by these global dynamics but also how rural and urban communities are interpreting and influencing these changes.  This subject investigates some of the most important issues currently confronting Australian society: the population/ecological (im)balance; the ongoing restructuring of key Australian industries such as mining, manufacturing and agriculture; the declining fortunes of country towns; and the social, economic and ecological issues facing Australian cities.  You will develop an understanding of the core concepts, techniques and practices of human geography through the unit&#39;s exploration of how &#39;real&#39; urban and rural places are made.

Where in the World? Australia's Human Geography

This subject focuses on learning research methods to solve real problems. You will come to understand how to design research, define an argument in response to the problems, use scholarly databases, consider ethical issues in data collection, generate field data, analyse and present these data, interpret results, and reflect on all these processes and their application to, for example, policy and professional contexts. The subject is a professional pathway in Masters programs in geography, planning, and spatial sciences.

Rural Geographies

Urban Geographies

This subject was previously known as Places Landscapes Regions.This subject uses the concept of cultural landscapes, and the related concepts of place and territory, to understand and analyse the character and pressures on environments. The subject will equip students to understand, explain and apply geographical analysis to contemporary issues at different spatial scales. These issues include climate change, urbanisation, land use, human-nature relations, and ecological degradation. Cultural Landscapes

This subject is concerned with the mobility of human life and the contemporary and historical processes of migration. Drawing on findings from human geography, demography and political geography, the subject will encompass: the history of migration, spatial patterns of migration in Australia, settler colonial migration, international migration, the globalisation of labour markets, the complex ethical, economic and security concerns emanating from migration, skilled migration, population ageing, and rural to urban (and urban to rural) migration.
