The Master of Financial Planning provides the high level knowledge and skills required of the modern financial adviser to start and progress their career. The purpose of this subject is to provide you with guidelines on how to communicate effectively with your clients and to ensure that you have the appropriate information from them to provide them with the best possible advice in your role as a Financial Adviser.This subject has been designed to provide you with suggested questions and formats for compliance to the current legislative requirements of “knowing your client” before you provide them with a detailed financial plan or statement of advice. The object of this subject, therefore, is to assist you to gain the skills necessary to establish a harmonious rapport with your clients that will, in turn, build a lasting relationship.

Financial Planning Skills

A comprehensive financial plan will contribute towards the quality of a person&#39;s life by reducing the uncertainty about their future needs and the resources that will be available to meet them. This subject is an introductory course examining what is involved in organising and managing an individual&#39;s financial resources, and how to protect, maximise and enjoy the benefits obtained from these resources. The financial planning industry has undergone significant change commencing from March 2004 with the implementation of the Financial Services Reform Act 2001 (FSRA). The aim of the subject is to provide a sound understanding of the process of financial planning, together with some of the fundamental skills and knowledge that are required. In line with these objectives, each of the recognised steps in the financial planning process that have been developed by financial planners will be examined in detail, namely: gathering qualitative and quantitative data; identifying goals; identifying financial problems including: setting priorities, deciding on trade-offs and considering opportunity costs; preparing or interpreting written recommendations; implementing agreed-upon plans; and, reviewing, revising and maintaining personal financial plans. The `key areas&#39; that are important for the financial planning process are examined, namely: the regulatory framework; investments; managed funds; superannuation; home ownership; risk management and insurance; taxation; consumer credit; social security; estate planning.

A strong and detailed understanding of professional ethics is essential for a career in accounting and financial advice. This subject will equip you with the essential knowledge you need to make ethical decisions and give you skills to help you stand tall in your profession. You will explore the major normative theories of ethics and deepen your understanding of ethical decision-making and reflective practice. By examining and discussing descriptive theories of ethics, you will gain insight into influences on ethical decision-making, including cognitive biases. You will investigate concepts of professions and professionalism, and analyse, compare and contrast the roles and contents of professional body codes.

Professional Ethics

To succeed in the fast-paced world of financial investment, you need the skills and knowledge to analyse securities, identify the strongest prospects and then combine them in a portfolio that will deliver results. In studying this subject, you will explore both security analysis and portfolio management. In the first module, you will analyse the risk and return profiles of individual financial assets such as equity, bonds, options and futures. In the second module, you will undertake portfolio analysis, optimisation and performance evaluation in an investment context. You will examine passive and active investment strategies involving various asset classes.

Security Analysis and Portfolio Management

This subject provides background information on the demographic trends in Australia and gives an overview of the compulsory superannuation system that operates within Australia. Within the financial planning industry, retirement planning forms an important part of advisory services.This subject will enhance your knowledge of the matters relating to superannuation and retirement planning for advisors in the financial services industry. The subject examines both the merits and processes in investing in superannuation for retirement purposes.Working through this subject should help you understand the dynamics determining the responsibilities of investing with superannuation and the range of investment and legislative implications. The subject will cover other important considerations necessary for participants of the superannuation industry and features including, taxation concessions, allowable contributions and income streams, setting up and winding down a SMSF, estate planning and social security.

Retirement Planning

In this subject, you will be introduced to the basic principles of investing. A discussion will be made of the main characteristics of investments with an emphasis on risk and return and the trade-off between the two. The subject focuses on the concepts of portfolio investment and the importance of risk management, plus addresses the issues of correlation and diversification. Identification of the risk profile of an investor is of critical importance in selecting an investment portfolio. The process of asset allocation is a very subjective one and particular to the needs of individual investors. You will study the process of asset allocation, as well as some basic investment approaches. While most people would have a number of basic investment objectives, few people are in a position to be able to devise a plan to help them achieve their objectives. A key ingredient to being able to implement a comprehensive financial plan is determining the investment products that may be appropriate for an investor. We will review the characteristics of individual investment products.

Investment Planning

Risk management is a complex, progressive and demanding industry based on the protection of individuals, businesses and governments against risk and financial catastrophe. Insurance is the foundation of our lives and the social and economic fabric of our society.This subject will assist you to develop a clear appreciation of the Life Insurance sector of the financial services industry. Life insurance is the cornerstone of most financial plans and one of the most important areas in personal financial management.The financial adviser must be aware of the need for and appropriate amount of life insurance and to match up the most suitable policy to meet the need within the client’s affordability.Although there are a wide variety of different life insurance products to cater for different needs in the market today, the basic types of products have not changed significantly. It is important that the financial adviser understands these fundamentals and is able to recommend the appropriate products that will meet the client’s situation and needs.

Build knowledge in a range of life insurance products that have been used in years passed, and will be used for years to come. Gain confidence in suggesting which plans are best for an individual's circumstances.  

Risk and Estate Planning

This subjects primary aim is to introduce students to the Australian Superannuation system and legislation. Advanced Superannuation and Retirement Planning
