Family history is for everybody. We all have stories in our family tree waiting to be told. The Diploma of Family History will give you essential knowledge and tools to bring the past to life through tracing your family experiences and understanding the historical forces that shaped them.Develop the skills and knowledge to share family stories with others. Our Family History course is designed to help you explore your family&#39;s past, while also becoming more proficient and comfortable in a digital environment. You&#39;ll learn how to undertake historical research while developing your communication and writing skills. Plus, you&#39;ll be part of a supportive cohort of family history enthusiasts and experts.Each unit is taught by specialists in Australian, British, European and Asian histories. As you progress through your course you’ll learn how to research, write and creatively communicate family history. You&#39;ll also develop skills to identify, analyse and interpret historical information from a range of family history sources.You&#39;ll learn how to use oral history, family heirlooms and photographs, as well as physical and digital archives to illuminate your family’s past. The Diploma of Family History focuses on understanding individual lives in their wider historical contexts, through investigating the impacts of events such as war, convict transportation, and migration.Our Family History courses are fully online. You can study these units in any order you choose, but we recommend commencing your course with Introduction to Family History. Many students study one unit per term.

Everyone has a story—and in this unit, you’ll learn how to uncover, research, and tell those stories with care, creativity, and historical insight. This unit introduces you to the tools and techniques of genealogical and biographical research, helping you trace family histories and bring individual lives into historical focus. Whether you&#39;re interested in your own ancestry or the lives of others, this unit will help you become a thoughtful and skilled life historian.

Life Stories: Biography and Family History

Who are the most interesting characters on your family tree? Would you like to write their stories to share with other family members, or with a wider audience? Perhaps you have an ancestor who is intriguing because of what you don&#39;t know about them and so can only imagine their story. This subject is an introduction to writing non-fictional and fictional narratives based on genealogical records. Students will gain skills in crafting engaging, readable family history narratives through writing historical and/or fictional pieces about people, places, and events from their family records.

Introduction to Family History is designed for people interested in their own family histories or genealogy in general. You will learn how to efficiently plan and accurately record your family history using family history research principles and practices. The subject will teach you how to critically evaluate a range of online family history resources for accuracy and reliability. You will also learn how to communicate your findings in clear writing that is accurately referenced. Online discussion forums will enable you to communicate with fellow students as you embark upon your research journey.

Adventure or romance, tragedy or triumph, legends of extraordinary feats or quiet tales of everyday struggles: what kinds of stories have been told about families in the past and in the present? What literary forms are suitable for writing multi-generational family stories? What can you learn from published life-writing as you pen your own family saga? This subject builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in HAA004 Writing Family History. Drawing on examples from published fiction and non-fiction texts in a range of genres and styles, students will learn critical and creative techniques open to writers of multi-generational family history. Students will have opportunity to develop key skills for reading and writing fiction and/or non-fiction based on genealogical research.

In this subject, you will work with media professionals to learn the basics of creating a family photo essay, bringing words and images together to communicate family stories. You will hone your writing skills and learn how to create, select, and edit photographic images. You will learn how to use the photo essay format for personal, professional, or creative expression. For family historians and genealogists, the photo essay format provides you with the opportunity to create compelling and creative stories that interweave the past with the present. All of the photographs that you make for The Family Photo Essay can be done with your camera phone or a digital SLR. You do not need prior camera skills as you will be taught technical and compositional skills.
