The Graduate Diploma of Criminological Research Studies is an 80 credit point program designed to provide graduates in the criminology and criminal justice discipline with the opportunity to undertake advanced study in research methodology and to undertake supervised research work in the discipline area appropriate to their research trajectory.The program provides the necessary preparation for entry into a higher degree research program (Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or equivalent program) for applicants who do not possess the required qualifications for direct admission into these programs. The program will also be available to students who wish to undertake advanced studies in the identified disciplinary fields but who may not wish to progress to MPhil or PhD study.Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to apply for admission to MPhil or PhD candidature subject to fulfilment of the requirements for candidature as specified in the <a href="http://policies.griffith.edu.au/pdf/Higher%20Degree%20Research%20Policy.pdf" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Higher Degree Research Policy</a>. The grade achieved will determine eligibility for admission to either a PhD or MPhil candidature.The Program Director will be responsible for the overall supervision of students in the program and for monitoring their progress throughout the program.Students may choose to exit the Graduate Diploma program (after successfully completing the specified courses) with the Graduate Certificate in Criminological Research Studies.

Graduate Diploma of Criminological Research Studies

This degree was previously titled the Master of Cyber Security.Cyber security analysis is an area of strategic priority for Australia. There is a current and growing demand in government, business and research institutions for graduates with specialised knowledge in cyber security analysis. The Master of Cyber Security Analysis (OUA) aims to supply the next generation of policy and strategic thinkers in cyber security analysis. The subject was formerly known as PICX889 Applied Criminology Practice and PolicyThis unit offers an invaluable scholarly perspective to analyse the effectiveness of contemporary criminal justice practice and policies. This unit enables students to develop a criminological understanding of the operation of various facets of the criminal justice system, particularly police, courts and corrective services and their limitations. Students will critically evaluate crime reduction and prevention strategies currently employed both in Australia and overseas, and will formulate practical and effective solutions to real-world contemporary crime problems. This includes using official crime information and data to present and report on policy outcomes and agendas. Students will be able to critically understand the structure and functioning of the criminal justice system, evaluate criminal justice policies, design, develop crime prevention and reduction strategies as well as evaluate the efficacy and possibilities of alternative approaches to both crime prevention and incarceration.

Drawing on your knowledge of Australian and international criminal justice practices and policies, formulate solutions to real-world crime problems. With a focus on police, courts and corrective services, evaluate current crime reduction strategies.

Crime and Social Policy

This subject was previously known as PICX842 Australia&#39;s Approach to Law EnforcementThis unit examines key relationships between the way crime, along with societal understandings of ‘the offender’, are commonly shaped by disadvantage, inequality and, ultimately, injustice. For example, criminologists have long assumed that socio-economic conditions and social inequality play an important role both in why particular individuals become involved in criminal activity and in determining levels of crime within particular societies. Moreover, the criminal justice system has increasingly become the favoured ‘solution’ to conditions of social, economic and cultural exclusion. Bringing together aspects of criminology, sociology and social policy, this unit examines how cleavages of gender, race, ethnicity and sexuality adversely impact people’s experiences of the criminal justice system, calling close attention to the all too close connection between local control, democratic governance and inequalities of punishment. In doing so, the unit seeks to shine a critical lens on the role of the criminal justice system in amplifying and reproducing social inequality, whilst analysing what punishment systems – thinking of how we punish and who we punish – says about us as a society.

Crime, Inequality and Social Justice

This subject was previously known as MAQ-PICX888 Advanced Criminology Theory.What is criminological theory and how can it help better understand and respond to ongoing social challenges? Delving into the intricate landscape of criminological theories, the unit addressing this foundational question by offing an advanced understanding of the historical and contemporary frameworks shaping the discipline. The course navigates through key theories, examining their historical evolution and contemporary applications. Starting with early positivistic approaches, through to more critical perspectives that focus on issues relating gender, race, sexuality and Indigeneity, students will be able to critically analyse the theoretical underpinnings of crime and deviance as well as explore the diverse perspectives from classical to critical criminology. Emphasis is be placed on synthesizing and applying theories to ‘real-world’ contexts, fostering an applied and nuanced comprehension of criminal behaviour and justice systems.

Understand how crime intersects with social, political, cultural and economic elements of life. Learn and evaluate advanced contemporary criminology theory. Cover left and right realism, cultural criminology, opportunity and deterrence theories.

Advanced Criminology Theory

The unit was previously known as PICX840 Cyber Crime and Cyber PolicingCyber crime refers to an array of criminal activity including offences against computer data and systems, computer-related offences, content offences, and copyright offences. While early computer hackers were more interested in youthful exploration, modern cybercrime is increasingly about criminal profit and this is reflected in the involvement of transnational organised crime groups. This subject will provide students with detailed understanding about the different types of cybercrime, the perpetrators, and investigation techniques.

Investigate the motivations, methodology and the victims of cyber crime by studying past and current cyber threats and future trends in high tech crime. Follow the involvement of transnational organised crime groups and profit trails. 

This subject was previously known as CCJ741.Forensic mental health is an area of specialisation that involves the assessment and treatment of client&#39;s who are both mentally disordered and whose behaviour has led to or could possibly lead to offending. Forensic mental health as a field therefore represents the interface between community safety and client centred practice. The two key intervention targets in FMH are mental disorders and problem behaviours. This subject will address the first of these targets by providing students with knowledge of general mental health interventions and components of recovery/recovery processes. Students will also be provided with skills in the delivery of specific intervention strategies targeting the most common mental health presentations in FMH. Students will also be provided with the opportunity to practice the skill of treatment plan development and role play delivery of specific strategies.

Gain an overview of the role of mental health and offending in the forensic mental health client population. Examine and evaluate psychiatric interventions that are useful in a forensic mental health system. 

Interventions and Recovery in Forensic Mental Health (Clinical)

The subject considers the most widely accepted approaches, in Forensic Mental Health (FMH), to risk assessment. Subject content primarily focuses upon the prediction of an individual&#39;s likelihood of harming other or being harmed by others. Risk and protective factors are examined beyond that of a present based individual level to include an understanding of developmental and environmental factors. The utility and applicability of different risk assessment tools is also considered as a component of an effective functional analysis and more broadly risk management in Forensic Mental Health.

Research risk assessment approaches and evaluate their application. Gain the skills to articulate which tools and methods are appropriate for different situations. Learn how to use risk management strategies to inform decision your making.

This subject examines the major, cutting-edge questions for criminology today. These include penal politics, policing, media and crime, restorative justice, the prison and state crime. It introduces students to the contemporary key thinkers and contributors in the field in Australia and overseas. Attention is given to the relationship between research, policy and politics in linking knowledge to social change.In this subject, students will read and discuss challenging and thought-provoking work of both Australian and international scholars in the field of criminology and criminal justice. As the purpose of the subject is to deepen students&#39; understanding of criminology through examining cutting-edge theory and research, the issues of focus will vary, but may include penal politics, policing, restorative justice and other emerging innovations, trafficking, transnational crime and state crime.Assessment details will be advised at the beginning of the subject offering.

Contemporary key thinkers present cutting-edge criminology questions on penal politics, policing, media and crime, restorative justice and state crime. Probe the relationship between research and  policy in linking knowledge to social change.

Justice and Crime

This subject focuses on developmental prevention to construct a framework for thinking about the prevention of crime and associated problems at the individual, family and local level. Students will examine the challenges associated with developing and implementing evidence-based programs for disadvantaged communities. This will involve consideration of the influences of multiple risk and protective factors as well as strategies to empower local residents and change developmentally relevant institutions and social policies. Assessment will include developing a proposal for a relevant developmental crime prevention project. Students will be required to demonstrate knowledge of relevant theory, methods for intervening in developmental pathways, and implementing and evaluating projects.

Understand the relationship between policy objectives and crime prevention programs to be able to apply criminological theories to research outcomes. You’ll design a prevention program within resource, funding and methodological limitations. 

Developmental Crime Prevention

It is conservatively estimated that 70% of forensic mental health (FMH) clients in Australia are males of functioning intelligence who have English as their preferred language and who align themselves with the dominant Australian culture. As they comprise such a large proportion of the FMH client group, the majority of resources and interventions are targeted towards them. This then means that there are a number of minority populations within FMH, who without our intentional investment and understanding would not receive effective assessment, intervention and management. This subject examines the special needs of these minority FMH groups, namely the specific needs of the elderly, adolescents, women, people with an intellectual disability, people of a different culture or language, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Delve into legal and ethical issues you’ll need to consider when working with people with special needs and minority groups. Appreciate the importance of inclusive practice, modified clinical applications, assessment and interventions with these groups.

Minority Populations in Forensic Mental Health

This subject will provide a practical understanding of how risk assessment and management is utilised within forensic mental health. This will include a foundation of the key principles for evaluating risk assessment tools, management processes and professional writing in forensic mental health. This subject will then build upon this foundation to provide students with an understanding of how these principles apply in the assessment and management of different offender populations. Students will follow and apply their learning to a number of client case studies across these population groups. They will follow these clients from assessment through to the development of reports which will communicate recommendations for risk management.Assessment details will be advised at the beginning of the subject offering.
