This subject provides students with a high-level understanding of space systems design and develops skills required to design successful space missions. The subject focusses on mission architecture and design but also covers fundamental space systems design including spacecraft design, orbital dynamics, communications, and a brief overview of space project management. Unpack how space missions are planned, resourced, and carried out. From ground, to launch, and space, this subject is an introduction to the major elements of space missions. Practice project management in space with a mission planning exercise.

Space Mission Design

This subject explores and explains the challenges of operating in space, from the environment of different space bodies to the stresses and difficulties this causes. It also provides an overview of the needs and requirements for, along with the details of, setting up habitats and resource collection. The learning outcomes involve basic understanding of ‘living off the land’ in the sense of utilising resources in-situ as well as using geological landscape and surface materials for building a human base and habitats. This subject will explore past, current and future programs to return humans to the Moon. From the dangers of radiation to the importance of setting up base, you’ll explore the realities of humans surviving in space. Think about visiting the Moon and Mars—their surfaces, resources, and landscapes. Work in teams to design a base.

Operating in Space

The subject outlines the principles of cell and molecular biology as underpinnings of life and organism function. Topics covered include cell structure and function, the molecular aspects of the cell cycle and the molecular basis of genetics. Gene structure, the control of gene expression, regulation of gene function, molecular processes involved in protein synthesis and the role of genomics and of gene therapies in medicine will be examined.

Cellular and Molecular Biology

This subject will take a combined and systemic approach to the study of the structure and function of organ systems in the body during the lifecycle. This includes an introductory module about the organisation of the human body, body regions and specific organ systems. Modules will cover the anatomy, histology and physiology of organ systems responsible for the support and movement of the body and the maintenance of the body’s homeostasis (respiratory, circulatory, digestive and urinary systems). An online learning format will include lectures, laboratory sessions, online work and workshops.

The Human Body 1

Space weather in the Solar System includes the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field found in solar wind plasma. This subject will define these phenomena, describe the origin in the context of the Sun and consider the array of destructive effects they cause on spacecraft, instrumentation and/or planetary bodies. The subject will cover solar flares, coronal mass ejections, the solar wind, and the plasma that makes up the solar wind. We will cover mitigation efforts, both natural – Earth’s magnetosphere- and synthetic – radiation hardening techniques, that can be used to minimise or prevent damage.﻿Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Explore weather events in space and how they can disrupt technology and celestial objects. You’ll use your background in STEM to unpack solar winds and radiation. Topics include CMEs and solar flares. Think about ways to minimise space weather impacts.

Space Environment

This subject aims to provide an introduction to our solar neighbourhood, including terrestrial planets, giant planets, minor bodies and the Sun. The emphasis is on conceptual astronomy rather than mathematical techniques.

Revolve around the solar system. Survey the stellar suburbs of stars, terrestrial and giant planets and the Moon and Sun. Understand Earth’s position.  Study celestial activities of the night sky. Probe the solid surfaces of Mercury, Venus and Mars. 

Exploring the Solar System

This unit looks at the approaches for calculating and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and lifecycle emissions at national, entity and even product level. The first part presents the elements of rigorous GHG and energy reporting methodologies using the Australian National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme as a case study. The second part covers the concepts and methodologies related to life cycle assessment (LCA). Its use is illustrated by examining case studies including LCA of renewable electricity, transport and oil.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Greenhouse Gas Reporting and Life Cycle Assessment

This second subject on the human body will continue the study of the structure and function of organ systems in the body during the lifecycle. Modules will cover the anatomy, histology and physiology of organ systems responsible for the internal body coordination and control (nervous and endocrine systems), the organ systems responsible for body defence (lymphatic and immune systems), and normal human development and aging. A further module covers principles of microbiology and the roles of micro-organisms in human infection.An online learning format will include lectures, laboratory sessions, online work and workshops.

The Human Body 2

This course will develop students’ skills to describe, interpret and appraise biomedical data and health information. By using practical scenarios and information available in the public domain, students will acquire the knowledge and the communication tools needed to engage with biomedical science-related issues in a range of contexts. They will critically examine how science is being presented in the media, evaluate the quality and integrity of the communication of scientific information presented and critique the appropriateness of the communication to the intended audience. Factors that affect health literacy at the individual and population level and strategies that can mitigate these will be explored.

Scientific Literacy and Communication 

This subject in calculus provides a solid foundation in the theory and applications of differential and integral calculus to a variety of real-world situations. The subject begins with some preliminary material that reviews the concept of a function and of basic problem-solving techniques and includes limits, differentiation, graph sketching, integration and inverse functions. Apart from imparting technical knowledge on rules of integration and differentiation, the subject requires students to solve conceptual problems, thus enhancing their understanding of the principles of calculus. The key aim of this subject is to make students understand, appreciate and finally enjoy and embrace calculus. Successful completion of Calculus will ensure that students have the necessary preparation and foundation for subsequent major studies in mathematics, in particular, Advanced Calculus. This subject is an essential part of the mathematics program and is specifically designed in consultation with education providers to meet the needs of teacher training. A key feature of this subject is the project based approach. Students are assigned projects. As each topic is taught, students are asked to apply their learning to the project and, as a part of their assessment, students are asked to submit their project report. Thus students will be able to apply the knowledge in a real life setting.
