This for-credit subject is a preparatory mathematics subject intended for students who have not completed secondary school mathematics and who have insufficient background for the more advanced mathematics required for success in MAS162, MAS182 and MAS161. This is a foundation-level course designed to increase confidence and ability in mathematical skills, particularly in the areas of elementary algebra, trigonometry, and linear algebra. There is also a focus on formulating problems in mathematical language, and communicating appropriately in mathematics.This course may be the first experience of serious mathematics. At this level, mathematics often requires persistence and approaching problems from different perspectives. Mathematics problems can sometimes be like puzzles — frustrating, but very satisfying once solved. This subject provides an introduction to differential and integral calculus, and basic ordinary differential equations. The concepts and techniques will be motivated and illustrated using mathematical models in engineering, the physical and biological sciences, commerce, economics, and the social sciences. Other topics include complex numbers and their applications.You are strongly advised NOT to enrol in MAS182 and MAS164 at the same time. This course continues from what you have learnt in Mathematical Methods for Engineers 1. Discrete Mathematics

This units covers fundamental topics in discrete mathematics, computer arithmetic and logic, including: recurrence relations, solving equations graphically and iteratively, computer arithmetic, basics of counting and discrete probability, matrices and linear transformations of the plane, propositional and predicate logic, mathematical induction, Boolean algebra and logic networks. Discrete Mathematics and Logic

Calculus and matrix algebra form the basis of the mathematical knowledge required to model physical, environmental, biological and engineering systems and investigate their behaviour. This subject assumes an understanding of the basic topics and develops them further. Vector and matrix operations, determinants, inverses and eigenvalues will be considered along with differentiation, integration, sequences and series, differential equations, and introductory multivariable calculus. Calculus and Matrix Algebra

The subject covers basic algebra: application and transposition of formulae, indices, solution of equations, and Trigonometry. It will also cover Functions: polynomials, exponential, logarithmic; Trigonometric transformations of function, Linear Algebra, and introduction to Matrices.
This subject has been developed in order to meet Curtin University’s requirement to enter Science based courses. The subject meets the minimum mathematical pre-requisite for Curtin degrees requiring WACE Mathematics Applications and may not satisfy requirements for certain study areas requiring Mathematics Methods, Advanced Mathematics or Mathematics Specialist as pre-requisites. We advise all prospective students to liaise with third party institutions as to the suitability of the UNR07 subject meeting specific entry requirements.
