In studying this course you will develop an in-depth knowledge about the theory and practice of counter terrorism studies; the emerging domestic, regional and international challenges related to terrorism and its implications for counter terrorism approaches and policies; and the evolution of Australia’s counter terrorism strategies and policies. It will also equip you with a practical skill set to analyse counter terrorism challenges, based on real world examples. The core units, provided through the Department of Security Studies and Criminology, focus on synthesising the latest developments in counter terrorism theory and practices. The elective units allow you to focus on other aspects of security, including intelligence, security and strategic studies, cyber security and criminology.

Please note: This subject is available in Macquarie Session 3, which is an intensive semester that spans only 5 intensive teaching weeks, plus a mid-semester recess and an assessment period. Students are advised to enrol in only one or two subjects in Session 3. Students who would prefer to take the unit over 13 teaching weeks should enrol in the Session 1 offering. In this unit, you will be introduced to the broad and diverse field of psychology. A range of topics in psychology will be covered in lectures and tutorial activities, learning both theoretical basis and practical applications of psychological science. Key communication skills will be developed and demonstrated by working on a group presentation, applying the empirical science of psychology for broader social good.

This unit provides a broad introduction to statistical concepts and data analysis techniques, providing basic statistical knowledge. The unit dedicates itself to developing an understanding of statistical practice and illustrates this by studying the techniques most commonly employed in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Topics covered in this unit include data collection methods, data quality, data summarisation, basic probability, random variables, and statistical models like the normal distribution, followed by sampling distributions and statistical inferences about means and proportions. Also studied are analysis methods relating to comparisons, counted data and relationships, including regression and correlation. Excel is used for handling and analysing data and word processing to report the results.

Introductory Statistics

In this unit, you will learn how to assess and quantify psychological phenomena. You will also learn advanced methods to conduct psychological research and gather empirical evidence to address new psychological questions, both academic and non-academic. This unit covers important principles of psychological measurement and assessment, including psychometric practices. You will gain a broad understanding of the range of qualitative and quantitative methods that are commonly used by practitioners, industry professionals, and researchers to answer their research questions.

Measurement and Research Applications in Psychology

This unit will introduce you to the psychology sub-disciplines of applied intercultural and community psychology. It will focus on theory and methods, as well as the ways in which interactions within and across different cultures influence behaviour, well-being, cognition, and the constructions and understandings of self, others and social reality. With a focus on strengths and competencies, not simply deficits and or inequities, the unit will include review of historical antecedents, paradigms, conceptual models, strategies and tactics of social and community change and action. Topics will include theory and evidence-based examples and methodologies from selected contexts and social systems, such as education, mental health, community organizations, the workplace, health care, the justice system, and social services.

Applied Intercultural and Community Psychology

This unit gives students the opportunity to engage in the composition of a self-directed research project in their field of specialization. This unit necessitates students to thoroughly engage with the existing research on their topic, using it as a stepping-stone in developing their own research skills. Students will be accompanied in devising a research question, translate this question into a set of research tasks, synthesise an appropriate methodological framework, conduct a literature review, and write up the result of their research as a coherent long research essay. This research relies on utilizing academic secondary sources and does not require original empirical work.

Supervised Project in Security Studies

This unit equips students with a solid understanding of defense analysis, examining key questions related to strategic domains and grappling with contemporary challenges such as the impact of emerging technologies on defence and strategy. The unit introduces students to a range of analytical techniques and explores net assessment methods, providing them with the knowledge and skills to critically evaluate defense capabilities and challenges.

Defence Analysis and Net Assessment

This unit provides students with the opportunity to examine in depth a current and topical issue in security studies and criminology. The specific topic of the unit will differ each session, capitalizing on opportunities for departmental academics to present contemporary and cutting edge research in areas of emerging concern for the security of Australia, its region and the world.

Emerging Topics in Security Studies

With increasing entrenchment of AI in human affairs, its scientific, moral, political, economic, and other social aspects are becoming a significant issue. For instance, there is a significant concern that machine learning algorithms contribute to the discrimination against members of oppressed groups (e.g., women, people of colour). This unit, co-designed and co-taught by relevant experts in Computing, Philosophy, and cognate disciplines, will present and discuss key theoretical, ethical, and empirical questions about the conditions of explainable, safe, fair, and responsible AI. Furthermore, it will explore scientific, ethical, political, economic, and other social implications of topical issues such as algorithmic decision making, applications of deep learning models, and robot rights. Students will be exposed to ideas such as balancing risks and responsibilities, both in the scientific and moral sense, in the context of the evolving AI technologies.

Rights, Responsibilities, and AI

The foundations of linear algebra and calculus introduced in MATH1010 are further explored and extended. Topics covered in algebra include: inverse matrices, determinants, vector spaces &amp; subspaces, eigenvalues and eigenvectors and linear transformations. In calculus the topics include: the further development of the concepts of limits, continuity and the derivative, numerical integration, polynomials, sequences &amp; series and differential equations. In addition, complex numbers and the calculus of two or more variables are introduced. Students utilise mathematical software throughout the course to support and enhance problem solving for a variety of theoretical and practical problems.

Calculus & Linear Algebra II

This is the first mainstream university mathematics unit; it is essential for students in engineering and many areas of science. This subject provides an introduction to basic concepts and techniques in linear algebra and calculus. In algebra, topics covered include matrices, systems of linear equations and their applications, including the use of vectors in two and three-dimensional Euclidean geometry and linear optimisation. In calculus, the concept of a function of one variable is explored, and the notions of limit and continuity are developed. The concept of the derivative as a suitable construct to describe rates of change is defined and techniques of differential and integral calculus of functions of a real variable are developed. Some simple differential equations and their role as quantitative models for dynamic processes, are discussed. Students are also introduced to the use of computers in mathematics, and develop modelling and problem solving skills through theoretical and practical problems.
