The Master of Creative Writing is designed to extend and challenge emerging writers to hone their craft in a small community of writers. The focus is on developing your creativity and writing skills, and to provide expert training if you are aiming for professional publication. You are encouraged to experiment, hone your craft and to develop a technical vocabulary for critiquing your own work and the work of others. This subject was previously known as MHIX365 From the Beats to Big Brother: Popular Culture Since the 1950s.What can we learn about the past when we examine it through the lens of popular culture? This subject traces a history of popular culture in the United States of America and Australia from the 1950s to the present, exploring the ways that popular culture can magnify and reflect changing ideas about race, class, gender, and ideology. We will examine the impact of new technologies, moral panics over popular culture, and whether popular culture constituted a form of cultural citizenship. Film, television, music and other media are used in this unit to evoke seminal moments in the history of popular culture and students are encouraged to explore these non-discursive forms as primary sources. Students are also encouraged to consider the reception of popular culture by audiences and to think about their own experience of popular culture historically. This subject will be of particular interest to students in media, education, and cultural studies, as well as history.

Be there for the emergence of sixties counterculture. Immerse yourself in the eighties and hip hop. Tune into the rise of reality television. Look for the influence of gender, race and politics on pop culture across the past seven decades.

From the Beats to the Bachelorette: Popular Culture Since the 1950s

Genre fiction often features distinctive storyworlds ranging from gritty realism to the whimsically fantastical. This unit explores the ways in which genre helps writers explore complex themes and issues through the lens of these genre-driven worlds. Rather than viewing genre conventions as restrictive to the creative process, students will investigate how genre conventions can be utilised (and, in some cases, challenged or subverted) to help writers build exciting and immersive worlds. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with writing memorable characters, creating unique fictional worlds, and structuring engaging plots through a range of popular genres.

Genre Fiction for Writers

This unit focuses on developing pathways to publication via traditional magazines, digital platforms, and grassroot community events and activities. Creative writing topics include literary and genre fiction, and creative nonfiction topics such as food, health, lifestyle, travel and entertainment. Students learn to analyse readerships, identify market opportunities, determine the most appropriate publication venues, pitch to magazines, and use digital platforms to build author profiles and distribute content. Students will also be invited to look at mentorships, fellowships, and residencies as part of a writing pathway.

Getting Published: Traditional, Digital, and Community Pathways

This unit trains students in poetics and language-usage as applicable to poetry and prose. The unit focuses on experimentation in craft and technique with particular attention to language, including poetic tropes, traditional and contemporary approaches to form as well as strategies for sequencing poetry and short-form prose works.In addition to writing workshops, students undertake close reading and analysis of published Australian and international poetry and prose and explore theoretical texts that investigate questions of form and the relationship of the reader to the text. Activities are structured so that students can make productive links between theoretical concepts and their own writing. At the outcome of the unit students will have produced major and minor works of creative writing and extended their skills in practical analysis of poetry and language-focused prose.

Word, Image, Form: Language-Based Strategies in Poetry and Prose

This unit demystifies the “literary” by examining the rise and development of literary fiction, noting its attributes as well as understanding what literariness is defined against. Students begin by having fun writing overwrought “purple prose” stories which they then analyse and learn to revise and edit according to a literary aesthetic. The unit also focuses on developing complex characters who drive plot, exploring significant themes and issues, and experimenting with different narrative styles.

Writing Literary Fiction

Why are we so fascinated by crime and deviance? What role does the media play in engaging people&#39;s fascination? To what extent can – and does – the media tap into and increase people&#39;s fears about crime? How does the media create subtle biases that inform our perceptions of crime? In addressing such questions, this unit brings together analysis from criminology, sociology, media studies and cultural studies to provide a critical understanding of the relationships that underpin our understanding of crime as a mediated phenomenon. Throughout the course, students will be introduced to the theoretical frameworks that help us understand media influence, examining, amongst other topics, the media&#39;s contrasting approach to children as victims and perpetrators of crime, the often misogynist portrayals of women who offend, the impact of social and mobile media in accelerating sensationalism of news reporting, the changing nature and impact of public surveillance culture as well as the news values that determine which crime events are considered worthy of media attention. Concerned with the ways in which crime is represented and &#39;manufactured&#39; through the media, students will be able to critically evaluate the production, representation and consumption of crime in the media, analysing how these processes, in turn, shape our perceptions of crime, risk and security.

Creative writing involves expression and skills. It also involves reading. This practical unit introduces students to different approaches and ways of thinking about creative writing. Students engage in a series of lectures and workshops, learning a range of creative writing skills and topics. Students are encouraged to be experimental and adventurous in their writing. Seminars address different creative writing topics and readings so that students can learn about various genres, methods and approaches. The workshops are interactive; they aim to increase understanding of the process of creative writing. The aim of this unit is for students to learn, achieve and realise their creativity and writing skills in their creative work, engaging with lecture and reading content and participating in writing workshops, on-course writing exercises, and doing set assignments.

You will then learn techniques of thesis-driven composition and improve your understanding of the ways in which sentences, paragraphs, and arguments are structured. Learn how to use others’ ideas to strengthen your claims without compromising your own voice as a writer.
