This subject introduces you to leadership theories, concepts and practices and allows you to explore your own leadership style through the completion of an individual behavioural profile and subsequent debrief. You will also examine how emotional intelligence aspects inform and affect your leadership style and the impact on others around you. You will apply different leadership styles and techniques in realistic scenarios, and reflect on the appropriateness and effectiveness of the styles and techniques. Through these learning activities, you will build the knowledge and skills required to be able to lead and interact effectively with people in a variety of settings, and to guide your own development in future leadership roles.In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject builds on concepts of learning through practice in Year 1 of study by introducing you to more complex learning experiences. You will be introduced to: -<ul><li>discipline-based skills and knowledge in dynamic practice situations. You will be introduced to the fundamentals of management that are vital for the successful operation of any business. From various journals and publications the opinions and experiences of both practitioners and academics will be emphasised.The subject is designed to be suitable for students at different stages in their careers and at different levels in the organisation. If you are new to a management or supervisory position this subject will provide you with grounding in management. At present, you may not be employed in a management or supervisory position. In that case, consider the subject as advanced preparation for a period when you may be assigned a managerial or supervisory position.The specific content of the subject has been designed to be sufficiently broad and comprehensive to prepare you for a range of different business settings. You will notice that the subject has been named Management, not specifically Maritime Management. The principles and practice of management are applied across all industries. This subject offers an investigative insight into the fundamentals of management. Encompassing platform leadership and organisation theory, a brief history of management theory will be followed by investigations into different theories of organisations. You will explore topics under three key areas being: underpinning knowledge/theories; applying theory to practice; contemporary and future management issues.You will be offered the opportunity to advance your understanding of fundamental management principles which can be applied in various organisational settings, ranging from private sector entities to NGOs, public sector taxpayer-funded organisations and start-ups. All students will be invited and expected to discuss topics from across the scope of this subject and the management discipline.To support discussions, assorted readings and other learning material will focus on foundational management approaches and management theories. You’ll be expected to read widely, being aware of current business affairs and applying capabilities associated with self-directed learning. You are invited to bring your ideas and questions to workshops for deeper exploration of topics of interest with the group.You will explore management theory and review case studies for the purpose of strengthening your ability to identify and address business problems and research possible solutions. You will explore ways and means to create and sustain a workplace where people are given the best opportunities to succeed and in doing so, support organisational goals. This subject aims to develop students’ understanding of how to identify, communicate, and build their skills to meet market needs and design flexible and sustainable career pathways and small business opportunities. The subject explores freelancing and small business sectors, including small business management theories, concepts, technologies, and strategies. Students will develop a personal work/life career plan for future (self)employment to enhance their success in the new world of work. Students will also learn to design business models and develop strategies for enhancing business efficacy in real-world small business contexts. This subject is designed as a highly interactive and applied learning experience with innovative modes of delivery.

Freelancing and Small Business

This subject introduces you to the creative industries and the roles of the so-called &#39;creative class&#39; and creative entrepreneur in shaping communities, urban development and digital economies in recent decades. By delving critically into the discourse of creative entrepreneurship, you will question what creativity is, how it has been used in the service of capitalism, and what dissenting voices oppose creativity. You will also explore first-hand how creativity can counter business-as-usual to forge new forms of democracy and engage in action for social equality and circular economies – or not! You will apply your critical lens to identify and develop a creative opportunity and learn the skills to develop a creative concept. You will also build communication, collaboration, and project management skills in this subject to further a creative vision.

Business planning for successful organisations relies on both strategic and operational plans that inform and guide day to day activities and processes. Strategic planning concepts include medium to long term planning, vision, missions, values and objectives of an organisation. This subject explores how strategic planning informs operational planning, with a strong focus on how operational actions and activities are formulated and decided upon. It investigates approaches that underpin data-informed decision-making and planning including being able to identify and incorporate organisational challenges, opportunities and recommendations for improvements. You will engage in analysing, interpreting and evaluating data, information and operating context using business tools such as graphing, SWOTs, and business model canvases to inform operational planning. In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject builds on concepts of learning through practice in Year 1 of study by introducing you to more complex learning experiences. You will be introduced to:- discipline-based skills and knowledge in dynamic practice situations. Strategies used to attract, motivate, manage and retain the right people are essential skills for all business managers for business success. This subject introduces you to how Human Resource practices including functions such as recruitment, training, performance management and teamwork. You will explore the legal framework incorporating fairness and respect, health and safety, and equity and diversity that underpin human resource practice, using business examples and applied activities.This subject also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, for you to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.

Managing People

This subject introduces you to the theory and practice of strategic management, focusing on strategic thinking and decision making. Throughout your study you will be asked to place yourself in the position of a strategic manager and to use your creativity and ingenuity in mapping out strategies that will help your organisation maintain a competitive edge. To assist you meet this challenge, we will discuss in detail the various stages that make up the strategic management process. We will use a number of examples from the Transport and Logistics Industry to show how the process works in practice (we will also use examples from different industries). Use what you learn about the process as a guide, but always remember that mechanically following a process or technique, however well tried and tested, is no substitute for creative thinking!As postgraduate students, you will be expected and encouraged to be creative and conceptual in applying strategic management theory. The key lies in how well you, as a strategic manager, can make opportunities out of threats (challenges) and devise ingenious ways of making them work.Students should draw upon all the relevant knowledge and skills gained from previous subjects. The aim of this subject is to introduce you to the type of financial information that you, as a manager, can expect to receive and to the techniques that you can use to analyse this information for decision making and control purposes. The subject is therefore written from the perspective of you as a manager of an operating subject in a corporate environment. This approach will provide you with a sound basis by which you can understand, review, analyse and use the various types of financial information with which you are most likely to come into contact.This subject also contains sections in relation to ship and port investment evaluation and finance and shipping business risk management. It aims to enhance your capability in understanding practical financial issues and applying financial concepts in the maritime transport and logistics industry where you may be working.
