Adventure or romance, tragedy or triumph, legends of extraordinary feats or quiet tales of everyday struggles: what kinds of stories have been told about families in the past and in the present? What literary forms are suitable for writing multi-generational family stories? What can you learn from published life-writing as you pen your own family saga? This subject builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in HAA004 Writing Family History. Drawing on examples from published fiction and non-fiction texts in a range of genres and styles, students will learn critical and creative techniques open to writers of multi-generational family history. Students will have opportunity to develop key skills for reading and writing fiction and/or non-fiction based on genealogical research.

Spanning over four centuries, from the Italian Renaissance in the late Middle Ages to the French Revolution in 1789, this subject explores the history of Early Modern Europe, a crucial period in shaping both Europe and the world we live in today. It investigates cultural, intellectual and religious change; the rise of the modern state; war and empire; the emergence of human rights; and modern political culture. Case studies include the Renaissance, the Spanish Empire, the Reformation, Witchcraft, the Enlightenment, and the Age of Revolution.

This subject introduces you to the world of ancient Rome through the study of ancient literary texts in translation. We learn how to analyse and interpret the perspectives of ancient writers who wrote across different literary genres and time periods in the Roman world. Mytho-historical narratives about the foundation of Rome provide a starting point for our exploration of how the Romans constructed their cultural identity through literature. Political speeches and personal poetry give us a window into the society and politics of the late Republic. Imperial biographies and plays illustrate how texts were used to critique power and authority in the Roman empire. This subject provides you with the foundational knowledge and skills required for further studies in Classics.

In this subject we explore the multitude of forces that have shaped the continent’s history from ancient times through to the present. We consider the extent to which Australia, and particularly Tasmania, has been moulded by factors such as violence, the rise of democratic government, the economics of empire, and cultural influences from the east and west as well as our Indigenous heritage. By learning how to unravel these threads through using traditional and digital tools and historical analysis, this subject will equip you to understand the shared and unique elements that have shaped Australia within the global context.

Stories are central to the human experience. Shared family stories contribute to a more complete picture of where we have come from and where we are going. In this subject, you will learn about the role of oral history in documenting family history. You will explore the ways in which oral history can complement, supplement, and even contradict written, pictorial, and other records. Practical skills you will acquire include how to record, transcribe, and share oral histories in a written form. You will also engage with ethical concerns and issues that may arise during the process of acquiring and sharing oral histories.

Oral History

This subject uses the material world, in the form of objects, images and places, to engage with remembering, researching and communicating family history and memories. By looking at homes, human-shaped environments such as gardens, and inherited items both mundane and valuable, you will explore how objects, images and spaces can carry stories, provide an immediate way to relate to your family&#39;s past, and interrogate the changing meaning of family over time. You will develop skills in interpreting, contextualising, and documenting your own objects, images and places, which you will then carry into responding to, caring for and sharing your history.

Who are the most interesting characters on your family tree? Would you like to write their stories to share with other family members, or with a wider audience? Perhaps you have an ancestor who is intriguing because of what you don&#39;t know about them and so can only imagine their story. This subject is an introduction to writing non-fictional and fictional narratives based on genealogical records. Students will gain skills in crafting engaging, readable family history narratives through writing historical and/or fictional pieces about people, places, and events from their family records.

In this subject, you will work with media professionals to learn the basics of creating a family photo essay, bringing words and images together to communicate family stories. You will hone your writing skills and learn how to create, select, and edit photographic images. You will learn how to use the photo essay format for personal, professional, or creative expression. For family historians and genealogists, the photo essay format provides you with the opportunity to create compelling and creative stories that interweave the past with the present. All of the photographs that you make for The Family Photo Essay can be done with your camera phone or a digital SLR. You do not need prior camera skills as you will be taught technical and compositional skills.

The subject will focus on further study of Latin grammar (morphology and syntax), such as the uses of the moods and tenses of the verb, further uses of the cases, and the introduction of the passive voice. We will also discuss further cultural phenomena (e.g. Cicero, Verres, oratory; the Roman system of government during the late Republic). This subject extends the skills developed in the first semester of Latin study. It brings students closer to reading Latin authors in the original language. It will be sharpen students philological and critical skills, which can usefully be applied in contexts other than classical study (e.g. in the study of other languages, of philosophy, literature and history).

Latin 1B

This subject is intended for students who have no previous knowledge of Latin. The subject is designed to provide a rapid survey of the language sufficient to enable students to read selected passages of adapted and original Latin. This subject is taught in blended mode, involving seminar-format learning and a variety of online activities, including videos, short quizzes, and online games. The language is taught in the context of its historical and cultural background, and includes study of the influence of Latin on the development of English and other modern languages.
