This subject is a study of the role of myth in Greek and Roman culture through literary texts and ancient art, including an exploration of the relationship between mythological narratives and religious ritual. This subject also traces developments in the depiction of the gods and heroes as a mirror of social and political change, and addresses the reception of classical myth in later ages.

Greek and Roman Mythology

This subject examines one of the most well documented periods in classical antiquity: the last century of the Roman Republic. We view the social, cultural, and political turmoil of this era through the lenses of ancient literary sources and modern scholarship. We analyse how ancient Romans perceived and represented the transformative changes and extraordinary individuals of the late Republic and interrogate how historiographical approaches towards this period have evolved since the 19th century. Our exploration begins with the sweeping socioeconomic impacts of the Punic Wars and ends with the reign of Augustus, the first emperor of Rome.

The Fall of the Roman Republic

In this subject we witness the birth of the Middle Ages, paying attention to the interactions between Barbarian warrior culture, Roman culture, and Christian culture. We examine the Franks, Anglo-Saxons, Huns, Vandals, Goths, Vikings, and other medieval peoples. Barbarians moved from being Roman outsiders to establishing their own kingdoms, pagans were converted to Christianity, Latin learning found a new home after the decline of the western Roman Empire, Islam had its origins, and new trade routes brought increased wealth as well as conflict between Vikings and other Europeans. At the same time, some fundamental aspects of everyday society remained constant for centuries.This subject uses written and archaeological evidence to examine this fascinating coexistence of change and ongoing continuities. As well as examining the transformation of Europe that took place between approximately 300-1000AD, the subject also examines the extent to which broader historical phenomena, such as imperialism and colonialism, might have been relevant in the medieval context.

This subject will deepen your knowledge of history, from Deep Time, through ancient and medieval times, to key social and political events of the 20th Century. Historical thinking concepts will guide your research as you use inquiry learning to investigate some of the myths and mysteries that make history controversial, contested and engaging.

Myths and Mysteries of History

The late eighteenth century saw the beginning of revolutionary political, economic and cultural change that marked the emergence of modern nation states and cultures. France was site of the first modern political and social revolution, and came to dominate Europe under the leadership of Napoleon. Britain was transformed by war, industrial revolution and the development of a global empire. This subject takes a comparative history approach to studying key aspects of the emergence of Britain and France as modern imperial powers.

Age of Revolution and Empire: Britain and France

This subject explores the first wave of globalisation that occurred in the long nineteenth century, between the Age of Revolution and the First World War. We explore how the world was transformed by the spread of industrialisation, nationalism, capitalism, imperialism, racism and ideologies of progress. Using a series of case studies to examine the impact of these changes on people living in different parts of the globe, this subject will enhance your understanding of the origins of our modern world.

World History: The First Globalisation

Adventure or romance, tragedy or triumph, legends of extraordinary feats or quiet tales of everyday struggles: what kinds of stories have been told about families in the past and in the present? What literary forms are suitable for writing multi-generational family stories? What can you learn from published life-writing as you pen your own family saga? This subject builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in HAA004 Writing Family History. Drawing on examples from published fiction and non-fiction texts in a range of genres and styles, students will learn critical and creative techniques open to writers of multi-generational family history. Students will have opportunity to develop key skills for reading and writing fiction and/or non-fiction based on genealogical research.

The Family Saga

Spanning over four centuries, from the Italian Renaissance in the late Middle Ages to the French Revolution in 1789, this subject explores the history of Early Modern Europe, a crucial period in shaping both Europe and the world we live in today. It investigates cultural, intellectual and religious change; the rise of the modern state; war and empire; the emergence of human rights; and modern political culture. Case studies include the Renaissance, the Spanish Empire, the Reformation, Witchcraft, the Enlightenment, and the Age of Revolution.

European History: Renaissance to Revolutions

This subject introduces you to the world of ancient Rome through the study of ancient literary texts in translation. We learn how to analyse and interpret the perspectives of ancient writers who wrote across different literary genres and time periods in the Roman world. Mytho-historical narratives about the foundation of Rome provide a starting point for our exploration of how the Romans constructed their cultural identity through literature. Political speeches and personal poetry give us a window into the society and politics of the late Republic. Imperial biographies and plays illustrate how texts were used to critique power and authority in the Roman empire. The subject begins with the formation and peopling of the continent and extends into modern history to cover the first arrivals of Europeans; the resistance and genocide of First Nations peoples; and the creation of a modern democratic nation shaped by war, immigration, rights movements, and climate change. You will gain access to learning materials created by leading experts in the field to develop an in-depth knowledge of Australian history and why it matters today.
