It provides the hard and soft skills needed within a clinical context, including leadership and managerial skills, financial management in healthcare, policy and human factor considerations. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be eligible to apply for the Master of Health Care Management and you will be exempt from the units you’ve already completed that are common to both degrees.

Graduate Certificate in Health Care Management

This course aims to cultivate excellence in quality, leadership and management in health professionals working in Quality, Safety, Risk and Middle Management roles in acute, community, mental health, primary and aged care public and private sectors. Students will, on completion of the course, have the capacity and capability of applying these skills in a range of management positions and become leaders and champions of change. Innovative and creative elective units are designed to allow different disciplines to focus on their areas of speciality. Advanced Standing: Up to 12 credit points of advanced standing is available to students who have completed a Level 8 Graduate Certificate or a Bachelors degree with Honours.

This subject is designed to foster knowledge of concepts, frameworks and practices of clinical and corporate governance, and an understanding of their application in health care settings. The integral links between an effective clinical and corporate governance framework and the four domains of patient safety and quality (consumer participation, clinical effectiveness, effective workforce and risk management) will be explored. Clinical Governance

This subject is designed to foster knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles and practices of health care funding and how this translates to financial management in a range of health care settings. Students will develop an understanding of effective and practical approaches to financial management and how this is linked to organisational strategy and sustainability. The subject explores financial management in healthcare at the strategic funding level, the organisational level and at the manager level.

Financial Management in Health Care

This subject introduces students to management in diverse health care environments. It explores the complexities and challenges of health care management, and examines theoretical and contemporary evidence-based practice perspectives through review of current research. Concepts of managing change, motivation, conflict,  information, human resources, community engagement and organisational behaviour are discussed in the context of Australian health care  organisations. This subject is suitable for health professionals working in leadership and management roles, and those aspiring to do so.

Managing in a Health Care Environment

This subject focuses on reflective practice as an essential component of effective leadership and management. It  explores the importance of self-awareness, and the interpersonal processes associated with effective communication, influence and persuasion. Frameworks for critical reflection are examined in the context of professionalism, supervision, lifelong learning, and research in the health care setting.  Students will have the opportunity to examine how their beliefs, perceptions, experiences and backgrounds influence their ability to lead and manage.

Reflective Practice in Health Management

Important Information: Students are unable to self-enrol in this subject. Enrolment must be via review by the Academic Chair to ensure successful completion of SHP632 Applied Health Research Methods: From Research to Practice and to discuss the project. Students will critically examine existing research across disciplines, synthesise findings to identify gaps, and formulate a research question or hypothesis grounded in evidence. Leadership in Health Care

This subject will prepare you to take a leadership role in the workplace that allows collaboration in ethical decision-making. The focus is on recognising actual and potential ethico-legal dilemmas in professional practice, and how decisions are made, justified and reviewed. A conceptual framework will be used to explore the decision making process while examining actual and perceived roles, professional values, and communication and collaboration practices when decisions with an ethical and/or legal dimension have to be made.
