The Master of Educational Leadership builds on the capabilities of current and aspiring educational leaders. The course is designed to support participants with varying leadership aspirations and career circumstances. Taught by active researchers and experienced practitioners, this course explicitly integrates theory, theology, ethics, philosophy and research to enable you to improve your educational leadership practice.You will explore the purpose and task of education, and Catholic education in particular, as well as theories of educational leadership, management and administration, and learn to apply them appropriately to your own school culture and context. CSP&#39;s are available for this course.

Master of Educational Leadership

This course is an introduction to the field of Positive Education exploring topics related to positive thinking, values, character strengths, resilience, mindfulness and the concept of social and emotional learning programs. It is designed for leaders in schools who wish to evaluate and strengthen established programs or implement new ones. The unit will familiarise students with the fields of Positive Education and Positive Psychology in the context of contemporary schooling. Participants will draw on theoretical literature across both areas to critically evaluate current programs in school settings and apply theoretical knowledge to develop programs in their own school context.

Positive Education: Wellbeing and Student Achievement

This subject will provide an overview of local and international, historical and philosophical perspectives that have influenced contemporary Australian early childhood education and care contexts. Their impact on early childhood education and care and its leadership and management will be critically examined. The subject affords the opportunity to explore and critique policy and procedure development in the light of current legislative and accountability requirements. Pre-service teachers are invited to examine approaches to: leading professional learning communities; engaging with families; sustaining advocacy for children; relating theory to practice and supporting professional research; and creating a climate for continuous debate and improvement of Early Childhood settings.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Philosophy, Management and Leadership in Early Childhood Education and Care

This course provides students with an opportunity to reflect on the process of strategic planning and the implementation of a strategic plan in a school context. It should be noted that the focus for this course is specifically on schools. Whilst examples of strategic planning and management in industry and government departments may provide useful comparisons, the focus of this course is on developing and managing plans for primary, secondary or composite (primary and secondary) schools.As well as gaining an understanding of developing a futures perspective and a strategic approach, the course will emphasise the need to identify core focus areas for school improvement and the importance of developing short term action plans.Hopefully, students will be encouraged to consider ways in which schools can improve their all-round educational offerings by being clear-headed about developing and implementing a strategic plan.Students will also be encouraged to think about applying their learning to practical school situations. Indeed, it is hoped that this course may provide a practical impetus for a number of students to engage in the process of strategic thinking and the development of a strategic plan in their own schools.

Strategic Management in Education

Pastoral Care in the School deals with the concept of pastoral care within the context of the school situation. The course explores the development of understandings and definitions of pastoral care from its scriptural and Christian bases to its role within schools today. Pastoral care has the individual as its focus, permeates all aspects of the curriculum, and is exercised mutually by all members of the school community. Pastoral care emphasises and promotes respect for the rights of every person. The ramifications of the moral duty of care and how care is demonstrated to students is also an important part of this Course. The course reviews forms of discipline and behaviour modification procedures in the classroom and in the school community. The psychological bases and sociological contexts of pastoral care policies and practices are studied. Special attention is paid to the distinctive characteristics of pastoral care in Catholic schools. The course provides case study opportunities for students to investigate.

Pastoral Care and the School

Organisations everywhere now operate in an environment of rapid, on-going and disruptive change. Leaders play a key role managing such change, which can include system-wide and local reforms, restructuring and innovations. Often, many planned changes are not implemented in practice as originally conceived. This subject examines some of the forces of change and for change in society today, focusing in particular on both barriers and facilitators. Students will develop deeper understandings of change processes, appreciate the complexities of these processes and identify some strategies to successfully lead change.

Leadership for Change

Expectations of leaders in educational and other settings can change significantly over the course of a career. In addition to understanding individual issues of changing professional identity, self-preparation, and role transition, leaders are required to engage with heightened responsibilities when government and institutional reforms of structure, culture and practice entail high stakes accountability through outcome-focused performance targeting. By the end of this subject, you will have developed advanced knowledge and skills in the connection between individual and systemic change in leadership practice through study of modules on: approaches to leadership, theories and styles of leadership, the practice of leadership; and the social dimension of leadership in educational and related work contexts. Part of the aims this subject is to enable you to have a better understanding of yourself as a leader and how to lead others.

Understanding Leadership

Discourses of improvement often drive the practice of leadership. Rapid changes to technology, increasing globalisation, and issues of organisational structure, culture and power impact on improvement agendas, as well as the quality and effectiveness of such improvement in practice.In this subject, models of organisational improvement and the change process are considered, with attention given to strategies for managing and evaluating change effectively in educational, training and other organisational contexts. By the end of this subject, you will have developed advanced knowledge and skills in managing and evaluating change through the study of modules on: change contexts, organisational contexts, learning contexts, and the global context. One of the aims of this subject is to enable you to have a better understanding of how leaders can lead organisations with a strong focus on improvement.

Leading Organisational Improvement

This subject was previously known as ECHX826 Leading and Managing Early Childhood Settings.This subject explores micro and macro systems that impact on the effective leadership and management of early childhood settings. The unit will focus on the critical exploration of three content areas: the social, political and legal contexts within which early childhood organisations in Australia operate; early childhood leadership theory; and roles and responsibilities of early childhood leaders and managers. Students will investigate diverse management structures, regulatory and legislative frameworks, and the ethical and professional roles and responsibilities of early childhood teachers as leaders and managers

Leading and Managing Early Childhood Settings

This subject provides a lens for examining the social, cultural and political contexts that drive the Australian STEM education agenda and associated leadership practices for creating impact, and curriculum transformation. Students will critically explore the impact of STEM identity on career choices and how this is associated with the low representation of women, Indigenous people and others from a diversity of backgrounds. Students will explore the leadership challenges of reversing these participation trends and consider the philosophical debates about the nature of STEM and how this shapes practices in schools and across a range of invested community contexts. Becoming a Leader of STEM Education

This subject integrates a rich understanding of the significance of social justice in educational contexts. It envisions educators at all levels and across contexts as leaders and invites students to reflect on and evolve their philosophy of educational leadership. Through a series of case studies and engagement with social justice theory, students will gain a holistic understanding of the principles of social justice and the skills to recognise and apply them to local contexts. students will explore how educators can hear, recognise and uphold the voices, views and lived experiences of learners, especially marginalised people and communities. Students will engage reflexively with their practice and use theory and research to build an understanding of how to respond to learners, their families, and their communities in a manner consistent with social justice informed leadership. In the assessments, students will apply this knowledge to practical, authentic situations by evaluating and engaging with both their own experiences and resources provided throughout the subject. The subject design and content will reflect and model social justice principles.
