In this subject, you will first be introduced to concepts fundamental to the understanding of Human Physiology such as the organisation of the human body, homeostasis, basic cell structure and function, body fluids and the movement of molecules within body fluid compartments. The basics of nervous system and endocrine system function in the context of physiological regulation and homeostasis will then be explored. This information will provide the foundation for the study of major organ systems of the body including the muscular, digestive, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, renal, and reproductive systems. This subject will also include content on metabolism of nutrients and acid-base homeostasis.

Map the complex architecture of the human body and learn how it’s organised and structured. Navigate the journey of the smallest cell to the largest organ. Observe how the body performs and adapts, responding to stress and disease to maintain life.

In this subject you will study the major food sources, functions and metabolism of macro-nutrients (protein, fat and carbohydrate), alcohol, and micro-nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and be aware of the consequences of over and under-nutrition. Principles of energy balance (energy intake and energy expenditure), basic techniques for assessment of nutrient adequacy of individual diets and simple techniques for assessing body composition in adults will be explored. You will also be introduced to the Australian Dietary Guidelines and Nutrient Reference Values, and the use of food guides in assessing the diets of populations.

Navigate the makeup of the human body. Uncover diet myths, and select the most nourishing foods using dietary guidelines. Calculate muscle to fat ratio to determine health. Weigh up the balance between what people eat and the energy they burn.

In this subject, these principles and strategies for future cyber security are explored. Key topics include: information security; ethical and legal practices; mitigating cyber vulnerabilities; and the process of incident response and analysis. The subject introduces the broad discipline of cybersecurity and outlines how to ensure the privacy, reliability, confidentiality and integrity of information systems and mitigate against cyber threats and risks.

Essentials of Chemistry is an introductory subject for students with minimal background or no previous study in chemistry. The subject introduces chemistry topics with a real-world focus to prepare students for further studies in chemistry and related fields of science. The subject will introduce and reinforce chemistry concepts, knowledge and skills in chemistry to enable students to apply chemical principles and practice during their studies and in future employment.Module 1: General Chemistry covers matter, atoms, the periodic table, chemical bonding, naming compounds, molecular geometry, atomic masses, the mole and chemical reactions.Module 2: Organic Chemistry covers alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and arenes, functional groups and reaction types. Module 3: Physical Chemistry covers gases, energy in chemistry, chemical kinetics, equilibria, acids and bases.

Students will be introduced to the rapidly expanding and influential field of information technology which comprises various types of technologies in computers (both hardware and software) and computer networks. It is therefore relevant to students in a wide range of disciplines: for examples, health sciences, business, engineering and technology. Students will be taught the fundamental principles of computer operations, different types of input/output and storage devices, computer networks including Local and Wide area networks, information systems, Database, the Internet, the World Wide Web and HTML. Students will acquire the knowledge and practical skills in information technology and be able to apply them to their field of study.

Inside Information Technology

In this subject, students will continue with the study of anatomy and physiology and apply the concepts of human structure and function introduced in HBS101, to the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Anatomical principles and terminology will be applied to relevant body systems and the concept of integrated function of multiple systems in one body region, the trunk, will be introduced.Please note: this subject was previously known as Human Biosciences B.

Introduction to Anatomy

In this subject you are introduced to the steps involved in designing and creating a software solution to simple real-life problems. To enable students to design a program, the subject introduces the way to break down the problems into smaller parts and analyse them methodically by using simple techniques such as drawing flowcharts. You will be introduced to the Python programming language as a means of creating executable program code to implement working software solutions.

Programming Environment

In this subject, you will develop the foundation knowledge for working with individuals in health and human services settings. You will learn how particular characteristics and actions of an individual impact on health and welfare outcomes. You will be: (i) presented with frameworks, including a developmental perspective, for understanding how the characteristics and actions of individuals impact on health outcomes; (ii) provided with foundation knowledge for understanding how individuals present in, and progress through, health settings; and (iii) review theoretical approaches to producing individual change in health and well-being settings.

Learn how different characteristics, including intelligence and personality, impact on people’s health and welfare. Study fundamental health psychology theories and concepts, and their application in the social services and healthcare sectors.Learn about the human lifespan—the health and behaviour of newborns to the elderly in real settings.

Individual Determinants of Health

This subject reviews what archaeology has discovered about the world&#39;s great civilisations. We investigate how civilisations developed and the implications of this knowledge for our own survival. We embark on a survey of the variety of complex human societies that have arisen in the last 6,000 years: in Egypt and the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Western Europe, China, South and Southeast Asia, Mesoamerica and South America. Lectures in this subject are pre-recorded and available on the LMS. Tutorials require live attendance by all students.

Unearth ancient history. You’ll explore the powerful civilisations of ancient Egypt, China, South America, and others. Trace the rise and fall of ancient cultures, thinking about how their stories relate to today’s society.

In this subject, you will develop practical abilities in both receptive and production skills in Auslan to a level of basic communicative competence. You will be introduced to key grammatical structures of Auslan and the use of the language in its appropriate cultural, social context and begin to understand the history of Auslan and the deaf community. Culture is embedded throughout language, so learning another language develops your intercultural communication skills, preparing you to be responsive and agile in varied situations.This is a level 1 subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
