Family history is for everybody. We all have stories in our family tree waiting to be told. The Diploma of Family History will give you essential knowledge and tools to bring the past to life through tracing your family experiences and understanding the historical forces that shaped them.Develop the skills and knowledge to share family stories with others. Our Family History course is designed to help you explore your family&#39;s past, while also becoming more proficient and comfortable in a digital environment. You&#39;ll learn how to undertake historical research while developing your communication and writing skills. Plus, you&#39;ll be part of a supportive cohort of family history enthusiasts and experts.Each unit is taught by specialists in Australian, British, European and Asian histories. As you progress through your course you’ll learn how to research, write and creatively communicate family history. You&#39;ll also develop skills to identify, analyse and interpret historical information from a range of family history sources.You&#39;ll learn how to use oral history, family heirlooms and photographs, as well as physical and digital archives to illuminate your family’s past. The Diploma of Family History focuses on understanding individual lives in their wider historical contexts, through investigating the impacts of events such as war, convict transportation, and migration.Our Family History courses are fully online. You can study these units in any order you choose, but we recommend commencing your course with Introduction to Family History. Many students study one unit per term.

Who are the most interesting characters on your family tree? Would you like to write their stories to share with other family members, or with a wider audience? Perhaps you have an ancestor who is intriguing because of what you don&#39;t know about them and so can only imagine their story. This subject is an introduction to writing non-fictional and fictional narratives based on genealogical records. Students will gain skills in crafting engaging, readable family history narratives through writing historical and/or fictional pieces about people, places, and events from their family records.

Introduction to Family History is designed for people interested in their own family histories or genealogy in general. You will learn how to efficiently plan and accurately record your family history using family history research principles and practices. The subject will teach you how to critically evaluate a range of online family history resources for accuracy and reliability. You will also learn how to communicate your findings in clear writing that is accurately referenced. Online discussion forums will enable you to communicate with fellow students as you embark upon your research journey.

Adventure or romance, tragedy or triumph, legends of extraordinary feats or quiet tales of everyday struggles: what kinds of stories have been told about families in the past and in the present? What literary forms are suitable for writing multi-generational family stories? What can you learn from published life-writing as you pen your own family saga? This subject builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in HAA004 Writing Family History. Drawing on examples from published fiction and non-fiction texts in a range of genres and styles, students will learn critical and creative techniques open to writers of multi-generational family history. Students will have opportunity to develop key skills for reading and writing fiction and/or non-fiction based on genealogical research.

In this subject, you will work with media professionals to learn the basics of creating a family photo essay, bringing words and images together to communicate family stories. You will hone your writing skills and learn how to create, select, and edit photographic images. You will learn how to use the photo essay format for personal, professional, or creative expression. For family historians and genealogists, the photo essay format provides you with the opportunity to create compelling and creative stories that interweave the past with the present. All of the photographs that you make for The Family Photo Essay can be done with your camera phone or a digital SLR. You do not need prior camera skills as you will be taught technical and compositional skills.

Ideas about Australian identity have always been expressed and contested in popular culture. These stories of ‘us’ have also meant that some people are seen to belong, and others are excluded from the full exercise of citizenship. This unit will examine Australian history through an examination of 10 key moments when the nation and its citizens were re-imagined in films, songs, novels, poetry, advertisements, sporting contests and plays. Each week we will examine a key turning point in Australian history and the popular culture that was produced to grapple with its consequences. When and why did the bushman become a central figure in the Australian imagination? How did ‘Muriel’s Wedding’ reimagine mateship in the wake of feminist protest? In what ways did advertisements featuring Rhonda and Ketut envisage the relationship between Australia and Asia? Students who complete this unit will develop a critical understanding of the relationship between storytelling and citizenship, master a chronology of the struggles over citizenship that shaped twentieth century Australian political history, and engage widely with the cultural institutions and archives in which our national memory is stored. They will also engage in a wide variety of historical research, classroom debate, and develop an original research topic to investigate. If you have already studied some Australian history, the unit offers a fresh perspective. It will be particularly useful for students who are intending to teach Australian history in schools.

Who the Bloody Hell Are We? Story and Citizenship in Australian History

This subject was previously known as VIS18 Historical Issues in Art and Design.
This subject provides students with an introduction to some of the key ideas and events in the history of art and design. It is intended as a basic introduction to the history of ideas and the effects such ideas have had on the recent evolution of art and design. While this unit has a Euro-centric bias, ideas from other cultural histories are introduced. Students are taught the visual literacy and analysis needed to be able to understand historical and contemporary art and design.

Since ancient times, magic and religion have shared a common belief in the supernatural and other-worldly encounters; yet their histories tell a story of acrimony and dissent.This unit investigates how magic and the supernatural have been accepted, understood and practised in a range of historical and social contexts.You will explore such themes as natural, ritual and demonic magic, necromancy, spirits, mediums and séances, fictional wizards and enchantment.Underpinning the study will be an examination of the nature and use of magic and its relation to religion, religious ideologies, science and entertainment.

Magic and the Supernatural in History and Culture

This subject gives you an exploration of how the Latin American people, landscape and culture have been defined through the writings of European, North American and Australasian travellers. Studying this history will enable you to appreciate how the concept of Latin America has evolved since Columbus&#39;s writing, and to develop a deeper perception of Latin American culture. The focus of the subject is of particular interest to Australasian students because of the intercultural links between Oceania and Latin America. <ul><li>There are no French or Italian topics available in LANG303 in Trimester 2.</li></ul>

European Literature and Languages: Historical Perspectives

This subject enables the student to explore historical styles of interior design and decoration in order to create an understanding of the context of contemporary interior design and decoration practice. For this subject the student will provide evidence of this understanding through visual and written means.

Learn how past design movements shape today’s interiors. You’ll study iconic styles as you journey through the evolution of interior design. Develop a deeper understanding of design and decoration across time and culture.

History of Interior Design and Decoration

In this subject we witness the birth of the Middle Ages, paying attention to the interactions between Barbarian warrior culture, Roman culture, and Christian culture. We examine the Franks, Anglo-Saxons, Huns, Vandals, Goths, Vikings, and other medieval peoples. Barbarians moved from being Roman outsiders to establishing their own kingdoms, pagans were converted to Christianity, Latin learning found a new home after the decline of the western Roman Empire, Islam had its origins, and new trade routes brought increased wealth as well as conflict between Vikings and other Europeans. At the same time, some fundamental aspects of everyday society remained constant for centuries.This subject uses written and archaeological evidence to examine this fascinating coexistence of change and ongoing continuities. As well as examining the transformation of Europe that took place between approximately 300-1000AD, the subject also examines the extent to which broader historical phenomena, such as imperialism and colonialism, might have been relevant in the medieval context.
