Food Trades Assistant

Assistants in the food trades prepare and food items and also perform storage and cleaning tasks. They are required to perform repetitive work such as gathering ingredients, cleaning workspaces and equipment, and storing supplies.

Duties and tasks

  • Adhere to strict health and safety regulations, check equipment routinely, and perform maintenance or cleaning regularly
  • Maintaining a clean working environment by washing utensils, surfaces, and equipment
  • Operate equipment such as grinders, scales, and dishwashers
  • Order and receive supplies and equipment
  • Prepare food items by measuring, weighing, washing, mixing, and cutting
  • Remove cooked food from warmers and ovens

  • Able to work well under pressure
  • Fit and able to perform physical and repetitive tasks
  • Operate equipment and tools

Working conditions

Food Trades Assistants work indoors in large kitchen settings. They are often required to work in hot and humid conditions, use heavy machinery, stand for long periods of time and complete repetitive physical activities. They may work nights, early mornings, late evenings, holidays and weekends.
